We Offer Peace of Mind For the Sandwich Generation!

We help the Sandwich Generation take care of aging paretns and families

What is the ‘Sandwich Generation’?

According to wikipedia

a generation of people, typically in their thirties or forties, responsible for bringing up their own children and for the care of their aging parents.

Add ‘juggling full-time jobs and after-school activities for the kids’ to this and you’ve got a perfect storm!

Myrtle Beach is a great place to retire to (read: cheap and mild climate). We host many ‘snow birds’ from up north for part of the year, but we also have a thriving senior community full of people who’ve made Myrtle Beach their permanent home. Many of their children have followed their parents to this wonderful place at the beach, raising their own kids while staying connected and close by their own parents.

As these retirees age, they become more and more dependent on their children to help them.

Are you one of these children?

Who Are The People in the Sandwich Generation?

A bit of history about the Sandwich generation and who coined that term.

“Social worker Dorothy Miller, originally coined the term “sandwich generation” back in 1981, to describe women in their 30s to 40s who were “sandwiched” between young children and aging parents as their primary caregiver. A lot has changed since then. Women are delaying child-bearing and seniors are living longer. Because of these added variables, the “sandwich generation” definition has morphed along the way and tends to target both genders and the predominant age is 40-65 years old.”

Do you fit into this category?

Are you caring both for your young family as well as your aging parents?

Are you stressed, overworked, stretched to the limit, and tired?

YOU ARE IT!

Strand Security and Technology Can Help You, the ‘Sandwich Generation’.

We have several products and services that can help you – the sandwich generation – with

  1. peace of mind
  2. practical help
  3. monitoring from afar
  4. personal safety

While this does not solve all of your issues and worries, we can help you get a handle on a few important issues.

Here we go!

1) Honeywell Total Connect™️️ Vehicle Tracker

GPS Vehicle Tracker from Honeywell Total Connect™️️ lets you check in on your loved one and where they are – in real-time from your phone. You can also check to make sure they are driving at a safe speed and are driving where they are supposed to be going. Won’t it be great to see where both your parents (especially if they are getting older) and your new teenage driver are with the touch of one button? You can monitor multiple vehicles straight from your phone or tablet!

To read more about vehicle tracker, read this previous article.

2) Universal Remote

From our own experience with older parents and teenagers, we know a home with multiple remotes can cause remote confusion. Confusion about anything isn’t good because who will they call?

You!

You who are at work, you who is taking care of business or the other ‘generation’.

To combat this confusion, we offer peace of mind!

We offer not only universal remotes for sale, we also will come to your home and program them!

3) Personal Panic Button

Whether your aging parent lives alone, or you have young (re)teen coming home from school while you are still at work, a panic button that works with your security system can really offer you peace of mind.

Personal panic button

4) Self Defense Classes

We offer self defense classes under our Myrtle Beach Self Defense division! We are excited we have participants from as young as 6 to 80 and up! Learning self defense together, with an older or younger generation is extremely powerful. We see mothers with daughters in our classes every month, especially mothers with teenagers (in high school or college). If you have a mom who lives alone, take the class with her. If you have a new teenage driver, or recent high school graduate, or college age daugther, take her to a class. The confidence, assertiveness and powerful knowledge each participant receives can save their lives!

Check out this recent news story about a runner who had just completed a self defense class and then was attacked! She not only survived, she was able to keep the attacker locked up long enough for police to come and arrest him.

From the article

“Thankfully I just took a self-defense class offered at my work and utilized all of it. My face is stitched, my body is bruised, but my spirit is intact.

The basic concepts and little phrases I learned—like ‘hard bones to soft fleshy places’—really stuck,” Herron said. “It’s not like I was taking notes and trying to actively memorize the class. Your brain is built to survive, but you have to put the right information in it.”

We are proud to partner with the Horry County Council on Aging and offer self defense classes at the the Grand Strand Senior Center starting in April!

Keeping Your Teenage Driver Safe on the Roads

Are You Worried About Your Teen on the Road?

Teenage Drivers - DOn't let yours become a statistic! Use Vehicle Tracker from Honeywell Totla Connect to track your teenager!

‘Slow down, the music’s too loud, put your seatbelt on, watch the road, don’t even think about touching your phone, pay attention!’

The list can go on and on, right?

We all wonder if what we teach our children about driving is enough. Even if we do, will they follow through with everything we taught them? The statistics for teenage driving (and the danger it produces) are staggering in this country. Strand Security wants to make sure all of our teens in Myrtle Beach are safe while on the road.

Let’s take a look at statistics and figure out why you may choose to “track your teen and stay in the driver’s seat

Teenage Drivers Are Not the Best Drivers!

The leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States is motor vehicle crashes.

● 1 in 5 teenage drivers has an accident in their first year of driving.

● Over 74,000 young people die or are injured each year by not wearing seat belts.

● Two-thirds of teen passenger deaths are in vehicles driven by other teenagers.

● Over one-third of teen fatal crashes are speed related.

● A 16 year old is 20 times more likely to be killed in a crash than an adult.

Teenagers Are at High Risk For Accidents!

● The risk of a crash is higher with 16-19 year olds than any other age group. Drivers ages 16-19 are 3 times more likely to be in a fatal crash than drivers over the age of 20. This is because teens are more likely to underestimate dangerous situations

● Teens that drive with other teenagers in the vehicle and the presence of male passengers increases the risky behavior (go figure!)

● Those that do not wear seatbelts. Did you know that teens have the lowest rate of seat belt use over all other age groups?

● Drivers with inexperience

● New drivers allowed to drive at night; from 2012 statistics we know that 49% of teen fatal crashes occurred between midnight and 3 AM.

Preventing Accidents in Teenage Driving

So how can we prevent accidents before they happen, and make our teens safer on the roads?

Seat Belts!
Research shows that seat belts reduce serious crash-related deaths and injuries by about half.

Practice

  • Practice and discuss certain situations.
  • Practice in all weather conditions.
  • Practice nighttime driving
  • Prepare with proper supervision such as a parent.

Parents Play a Key Role in Preventing Teenage Accidents

  • Discuss all rules of driving and the consequences for not following them.
  • Establish a Teen-Parent Driving Contract that puts the rules in writing and sets expectations.
Here is an example contract to help guide you…
  • Attend a drivers education program.
  • Share driving situations with other parents with teenagers. It takes only a second to share information and may save a life.

The above information is a useful tool to help start off with a new teen driver. However, at Strand Security we like to take it one step farther with Honeywell Total Connect™. This is a tracking service we provide that will allow you to “track your teens and stay in the driver’s seat”
