Myrtle Beach is a great place to retire to (read: cheap and mild climate). We host many ‘snow birds’ from up north for part of the year, but we also have a thriving senior community full of people who’ve made Myrtle Beach their permanent home. Many of their children have followed their parents to this wonderful place at the beach, raising their own kids while staying connected and close by their own parents.
As these retirees age, they become more and more dependent on their children to help them.
A bit of history about the Sandwich generation and who coined that term.
“Social worker Dorothy Miller, originally coined the term “sandwich generation” back in 1981, to describe women in their 30s to 40s who were “sandwiched” between young children and aging parents as their primary caregiver. A lot has changed since then. Women are delaying child-bearing and seniors are living longer. Because of these added variables, the “sandwich generation” definition has morphed along the way and tends to target both genders and the predominant age is 40-65 years old.”

We offer self defense classes under our Myrtle Beach Self Defense division! We are excited we have participants from as young as 6 to 80 and up! Learning self defense together, with an older or younger generation is extremely powerful. We see mothers with daughters in our classes every month, especially mothers with teenagers (in high school or college). If you have a mom who lives alone, take the class with her. If you have a new teenage driver, or recent high school graduate, or college age daugther, take her to a class. The confidence, assertiveness and powerful knowledge each participant receives can save their lives!
Check out this recent news story about a runner who had just completed a self defense class and then was attacked! She not only survived, she was able to keep the attacker locked up long enough for police to come and arrest him.
From the article
“Thankfully I just took a self-defense class offered at my work and utilized all of it. My face is stitched, my body is bruised, but my spirit is intact.
The basic concepts and little phrases I learned—like ‘hard bones to soft fleshy places’—really stuck,” Herron said. “It’s not like I was taking notes and trying to actively memorize the class. Your brain is built to survive, but you have to put the right information in it.”
We are proud to partner with the Horry County Council on Aging and offer self defense classes at the the Grand Strand Senior Center starting in April!
