Let’s get started with October’s edition!
The weather is so fine we can spend hour upon hours on our porches. Our friends and family join us as we sit and watch neighbors mow the lawn, kids play outside and friends walk their dog. Everyone wave and time just seems to stand still. If you are lucky, you’ll be invited on the porch to have a glass of iced tea!
Nothing says South Carolina like sweet tea. It’s a staple in all southern homes and visitors are offered a tall glass of cold, refreshing sweet tea. Don’t confuse sweet tea with hot tea or *gasp* ask for unsweetened tea! Drink is sweet, like the people of this state!
When you are home, you are family. When you are brought into a home as a stranger or a friend, you leave as family! Southern families embrace their visitors and will make you feel oh so special!
While the sounds of southern voices might seem sweet, don’t be fooled by ‘Bless her Heart’. Expect rich conversations, gentle scolding and strong opinions about God, country and freedom.
While Southerns might have a different opinion than you do, they will wrap it all up in a nice and polite package! They will stay calm cool and collected. Etiquette dictates they keep their cool and stay polite no matter what, offering southern hospitality even if you agree to disagree. They’ll Bless you Heart, and will remain polite.
Southern foods are rich in tradition, and butter! Southern foods are plentiful and delicious. They include okra, greens, Fried Chicken, black-eye peas, hush puppies and BBQ.
While we love our K & W and Cracker Barrel there is no substitute for home cooked meals! Getting invited to Thanksgiving Dinner or Christmas means getting double, triple of all your favorite sides and desserts as southern cooks go all out to please their families.
Living in the south means you understand southern charm. Sweet Meemaws who love and spoil their grandkids, ladies who sat through hours of cotillion to learn not only the right etiquette, but also how to charm just about anyone, anywhere at any time!
People in the south take care of their own, and then some! They share what they have, no matter how little with those less fortunate. Charity is learned in Sunday school classes, in the home and is continued at work! Many adults are involved in charitable organizations making the lives of other southerns just a bit better.
The south, and of course South Carolina is steeped in tradition. If you live here, you know! High school football games are huge. Homecoming is better in South Carolina than anywhere else. Tradition seeps into every aspect of life in the south.

“In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine?
Can’t you just feel the moonshine?
Ain’t it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind?
Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind”

There are many different types of South Carolina Barbecue, but they all start with pork!
In South Carolina, that meat is invariably pork — sometimes pulled from a whole hog, sometimes chopped from a slow-smoked shoulder or ham, but always deriving from somewhere on the pig. In fact, try this experiment. Take a South Carolinian to a barbecue buffet (there is not shortage of such operations in the Palmetto State) and ask him or her, “go get me some barbecue.” What you’re going to get back is guaranteed. The steam table may be loaded down with ribs, chicken quarters, and maybe even sliced brisket, but unless they just recently moved to the state from Ohio, your dining companion is certain to bring you back a plate piled high with pork.
Southern houses and porches – the perfect pair!
Our lovely weather is conducive to long evenings on the porch. Unless you live in one of our cities in a small apartment, most South Carolina houses feature a front (or rear) porch as a must-have outdoor room!
