Summer Crime Statistics and Break-in Numbers
For many law enforcement agencies, crime spikes during the summer. Crime statistics indicate warmer cities, however, often don’t experience much change. It’s generally cities in colder climates and tourist destinations, like Myrtle Beach, that experience the largest monthly changes in reported crimes.
Why is that?
Summer is supposed to be the best time of the year, but it sure brings out the worst in some people. A study released by the US Dept. of Justice found a definite correlation between the season and the crime rate. Researchers found that crime rates are often lower in the fall and winter while peaking in the summer. Some of the summer crime rate increases were significant.
On the Grand Strand, we also have a spike in crime rate due to an influx of tourists visiting our area. As our population swells in the summer months, so do crime rates!
