We are three weeks into the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Are you prepared?
Have you prepared yourself, your family, your home, your business for a hurricane, should one head our way?
More often than not, those who live in coastal areas along the Grand Strand will wait until a hurricane has been named and is headed towards South Carolina before starting their hurricane prep and unfortunately, it can be too late to get certain prep done that late in the game!
Instead, get started on your hurricane kit before the end of this month and stay ahead, alert and prepared!
There are two major purchases to consider if you are new to the south and to hurricane preparedness.
The first purchase is a generator.
If you are wondering who should purchase a generator for hurricane season, here is our take on this!
If you fall into any of these categories, you should consider purchasing a generator this season. Keep an eye out for sales and specials; often this type of equipment can be found on sale either during a 4t of July sale or Labor Day sales event.
The second important purchase is insurance.
This could include homeowners insurance, renters insurance, flood insurance and/or wind and hail insurance, depending on where you live and whether you own your home or rent it.
Of course, if you are traveling to a coastal area during hurricane season, you also might want to look into travel insurance!
If you were to talk to 100 local residents about hurricane prep, you will get 100 opinions!
Do you need to prep for hurricanes as early as June?
No, you don’t have to, but we suggest you better not get caught unprepared later in the season. Peace of mind counts for a lot.
If you have dependents; a spouse, small children, elderly parents or pets, it is even more important to prepare for a hurricane season well in advance of any named storm headed to the Grand Strand.
According to the National Weather Service
CSU calls for another busy season with a total of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes
This is slightly above average and makes us at Strand Security even more glad we’ve published an amazing resource for our local residents.

Whether you are visiting the Myrtle Beach area, also known as the Grand Strand, or you are a new resident, asking longtime residents about the area is always a great idea!
When moving here from ‘up north’, other parents, but especially moms provided us with the best tips and the in-depth knowledge about the area. We learned about the best libraries to take our kids to, the best preschools near our home, the most fun indoor play places and the most affordable places to eat out with kids.
But what about summer activities with kids?
Since it is June and kids will be home for another 10 weeks or so, we want to share some insider mom tips with you!
All Grand Strand beaches are fun for kids. However, there are three beach areas that warrant special mention.
It doesn’t rain a whole lot in our area, but when it does, it’s nice to know there are a few indoor spaces to let the kids burn off energy. Here is our local mom top pick.
Besides the free beaches, there are several other free activities to check out; the locals will beat you there, but not many tourists will know and thus you’ll be sure to have plenty of space. Here is one well-loved free summer activity in Myrtle Beach!
Schedule is subject to change without notice based on availability
We wish you and yours a fun-filled summer!
Strand Security is a locally owned and locally operated small business. We are also soccer parents.
All three of our boys play soccer locally and love the sport. We are huge soccer family and we can be found on the sideline of a soccer training or soccer game most evenings and weekends.
Did you know that our local soccer club, Coast FA, is the 5th largest club in the state of South Carolina?
As local business owners, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
There are several local charities we have supported over the past seven+ years.
We’ve also been involved in local fundraising projects, like that time we collected donations for the Louisiana flood victims.
A little over two years ago, we started a Self-Defense division of Strand Security and in those two years have provided over 20 classes for local girls and women in self-defense.
Last but not least, being a sponsor for the local soccer club allows us to help provide soccer programs to underprivileged children who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to play this incredible team sport.
Coast Fa offers a variety of soccer programs year-round.
This includes the following programs
Follow the Myrtle Beach Mutiny Facebook Page to stay updated on home games played in North Myrtle Beach! Watching that level of soccer is a treat and especially since it doesn’t warrant much travel to see this team!
Coast Fa players get a chance to interact with many of these top-level players during summer camp!
You see, many of the Myrtle Beach Mutiny players are also the camp trainers!
If you are looking for a fun program for your young soccer players, check out the Coast FA summer day camps.
The first camps start next week! Take it from one soccer parent to another; your kids will have a blast.
Welcome to the South! If you are new to South Carolina or North Carolina and this is your first summer in the south, you might be new to the Atlantic Hurricane season as well.
The Myrtle Beach area, where Strand Security is located, is a fast-growing area. New housing developments are popping out of the ground like mushrooms and new roads, intersections and schools are constructed so fast it’s hard to keep up with!
Many of the new residents to the Grand Strand are moving here from ‘up North’ as we locals say. That means that many new residents are unfamiliar with hurricane season, hurricane prep and hurricane readiness.
No worries, Strand Security is here to help you navigate hurricane prep!
This coming week is the start of hurricane season in case you didn’t know.
The 2018 hurricane season runs from June 1, 2018, to November 30, 2018.
Hurricane activity has already been spotted and this 2018 hurricane season is expected to more active than usual!
What does that mean? It means that there is a higher chance of a hurricane affecting the Carolinas and thus affecting you, our fellow Grand Strand residents. Fortunately, those who have lived here their whole lives, and those who’ve experienced and lived through hurricanes, are always happy to share their knowledge with those who are new to the area.
Why ‘reinvent the wheel’ when you can learn from past mistakes and triumphs?!
As the hurricane season is usually not too active in June, this is a great time to do your research on what it will take to be ready and prepared for when a hurricane does head towards the Carolinas.
You will need to get a handle on what supplies are needed and when to start collecting a hurricane kit.
Here are 4 things you can start on in June, even if there is no hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean!
Next, start on your plans for evacuations and or staying.
Think about creating hurricane plans for

Why should you think about hurricane prep when there is no hurricane in sight?
Here is why!
As soon as there is a named hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, people panic.
Weather channels will regurgitate information, locals will run to the stores to purchase hurricane supplies and you’ll be overwhelmed with helpful and not-s-helpful hurricane preparedness advice.
Take it from us – do your homework now.[Not to mention that any insurance policy you’d take out won’t be in effect that close to a natural disaster!]
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail!
For many law enforcement agencies, crime spikes during the summer. Crime statistics indicate warmer cities, however, often don’t experience much change. It’s generally cities in colder climates and tourist destinations, like Myrtle Beach, that experience the largest monthly changes in reported crimes.
Why is that?
Summer is supposed to be the best time of the year, but it sure brings out the worst in some people. A study released by the US Dept. of Justice found a definite correlation between the season and the crime rate. Researchers found that crime rates are often lower in the fall and winter while peaking in the summer. Some of the summer crime rate increases were significant.
On the Grand Strand, we also have a spike in crime rate due to an influx of tourists visiting our area. As our population swells in the summer months, so do crime rates!
Summertime = Burglary time!
From one of our earlier articles:
2 million home break ins are reported each year in the United States!
30 percent of break ins occur through an unlocked window or door.
66 percent of all break ins are residential break-ins vs business break ins.
The highest percentage of break ins happens during the summer months.
Homes without security systems are up to 300% more likely to be broken into.
How can you protect what is yours in this type of environment?
Make a plan to keep your home and other assets safe while away.
Failing to plan is planning to fail!
Instead, follow these guidelines.
Having someone keep an eye on your property is a smart way to go on vacation and come home to an undisturbed home.
Smart burglars – and yes, there are some smart and sophisticated burglars and thieves out there – will avoid confrontation. They do not want to come to your home while you are home. They do not want to break down a door, they’d rather find one unlocked. They do not want an alarm set off. They’d much rather burglarize a home without a system.
Here are 7 ways to protect your home while you are away (for the day or) on vacation!
Wouldn’t love to be a ‘fly on the wall’ to keep an eye on your home while away?
You can be!
With our Honeywell Total Connect App, you can monitor your home (or any other asset) from afar from your phone or tablet, in real time!
Doesn’t knowing this give you peace of mind while on vacation?
Don’t delay talking with your friendly, local security company! Whether you need a new system installed or you want an upgrade with more cameras and newer technology, we at Strand Security have you covered!
It’s not too late to protect your assets this summer!
The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1, 2018, till November 30, 2018. A lot can happen in those months and we are sure to see storm activity in the ocean soon enough.
If you are new to South Carolina, or the South Carolina coast, you might not have experienced a hurricane season before now.
You might ask yourself ‘Should I evacuate with the next hurricane?’
The answer might surprise you!
There are several factors involved in whether you should evacuate for a hurricane.
Here are the most important factors you need to decide whether to stay and ride out the next storm, or whether you should evacuate.
It’s a personal decision whether to evacuate or stay during any storm and therefore you will be personally responsible for your actions, either way!
If you’ve ever ridden out a storm at home, you know how scary that can be! You don’t know what can and will happen!
You have to be prepared for the worst …
…and hope for the best!
If you do head to a shelter, make sure to bring the appropriate supplies.
You should bring at least a 3 day supply of the following:
- Food & Water – Bring snacks, bottled water and non-perishable canned or packaged food.
- Medications – Bring prescriptions, glasses and contacts and durable medical equipment.
- Clothing- Bring a complete change of clothes and footwear.
- Bedding – This include blankets and sleeping bags.
- Hygiene Items – Bring sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste and sanitary items.
- Important Papers – This includes ID, proof of residency and insurance papers.
- Cash – This is just in case your debit or credit card is not working.
- Entertainment Items -This includes puzzles, toys for children and reading material.
- Miscellaneous – Battery-powered radio, First-Aid Kit, flashlight, Cash
The very best way to prepare for the next storm is to start now before there is a named storm in the Atlantic Ocean headed to South Carolina!
If you live on the east coast, you know all about hurricanes. Myrtle Beach and South Carolina residents certainly have experience dealing with hurricanes!
You might have lived through one recently.
Are you prepared? Do you feel ready to tackle yet another Atlantic Hurricane Season? Last time a hurricane came to your state and town, did your home lose power? Did you have a generator or did you muddle through?
Today, we look at why you really need a generator if you want to stay safe during the next hurricane!
In case of a power outage, your generator can take over important tasks in your home, especially now that many of us live in Smart homes and almost everything we do runs on electricity!
Here are some of the important devices in and around your home that run on, or use, electricity!
Think about your
For those of you with small kids
For those of you who are elderly or live with the elderly
There is one other system that runs on electricity and that is your home security system!
This question seems to come up year after year; who should purchase a generator for hurricane season?
Here is our take on this!
We highly recommend you do your due diligence and check out your options to purchase a generator. We highly recommend you purchase a generator BEFORE hurricane season begins in full-force as the supply will dwindle quickly as soon as there’s a named storm in the Atlantic Ocean.
Having a generator allows you to keep your security system activated!
Here is what Chuck Bryant of Strand Security has to say:
You can prepare for extended power outages (especially in coastal areas) by doing the following;
- Connect the power circuit that powers your alarm panel to a generator.
- Make sure you have a spare battery on hand. Power outages can certainly exceed the life of an existing battery.
- Call your security company today to get your ‘back up’ alarm panel battery. Do not delay. As soon as a storm is named, these batteries, like all generators and all other hurricane supplies, will be in high demand.
- If you have to evacuate, relay this information to your security company.
- Monitor your assets from your smartphone and/or tablet while away.
Safety and security go hand-in-hand during a storm! Don’t delay, prepare your home today for hurricane season!
You should purchase a generator when you start preparing for the next hurricane season.

The question of whether cheap security systems can protect you in an emergency is a simple one.
The answer is ‘Yes, cheap security systems CAN protect you in an emergency, however…’
As always, there’s a caveat to such a question.
The ‘however‘ is what this article will focus on. Please read on.
The problem with cheaply made products is that they are… well… cheap!
In other words, cheap security systems might not last as long and replacement costs can thus drive up your total cost.
If you are in the market for an upgrade and you want to go cheap, be forewarned that cheap systems often don’t integrate well with older systems or any system for that matter. Meaning, you might have to fork over more money because you might not be able to reuse existing hardware. Again, in the end, this will drive up the final cost.
Cheaply made does not always have to mean lesser quality.
When it does, however, and when cheap translates into broken or malfunctioning systems requiring maintenance, this, of course, comes at a cost.
As much as we like you, our customer, we really don’t want to come see you every month because of issues with a cheap security system. We much rather spend our time helping (new) customers set up new systems that will last a long, long time!
When a system breaks to no fault of yours, warranties will allow for replacement units. That is, as long as you didn’t pick the cheapest security system without such warranty. In that case, you will be responsible for replacing units and again, cheap becomes expensive when you have these unexpected additional costs associated with your security system.
We work with many different brands and we stand behind every piece of equipment we install.
Have you checked out the Honeywell Total Connect systems and mobile apps?
We believe everyone can afford a security system; let us work within your budget!
If the security system is new and has been installed by a reputable dealer, even cheap security systems will
If you have a monitoring company like C.O.P.S. to keep you safe, you are in even better hands!
We invite you to give us a call to see how we may help you with the selection of the right security system for you and your budget!
Did you know that?
Most break-ins happen through unlocked doors and happen during the daytime hours of 10 AM – 2 PM.
Yes, that’s right! Daytime break-ins happen more than at any other time day or night, with easy access, because people don’t use their locks. We make it really easy for thieves to have access to our valuables this way.
We can do better than that, can’t we?
Let’s start with something you can do right now that will make it just a bit harder for someone to break into your home.
Sounds simple enough, but it is a habit you need to create by doing it each and every time.
Start off by reading about evening routines to keep your family and your assets safe. You can apply some of these same principles to a daytime routine when you leave your home to go to work, to go shopping or even just going for a walk with your dog. Don’t ever assume that thieves come during the night in a black mask. Often, they come during the day, they might greet your neighbors and walk out with your valuables without anyone suspecting what they are doing.
Locking your doors is the first step.
So what is step two to prevent break-ins?
Can we assume you always do due diligence on new purchases like homes, cars, refrigerators, and HVAC systems? You need to do due diligence on door alarms the same way.
This includes learning more about door alarms before talking to a dealer about purchasing a system.
Once you have this information on a list, then pick up the phone and call your nearest local security dealer at 843-318-6392
Each security dealership has preferred vendors and brands they work with.
The best door alarms are those your security company uses the most, and those they trust to keep their customers and their family safe.
Why don’t you ask this:
“What door alarm do you have installed in your home?”
This should give you an answer to the question; ‘what is the best door alarm to keep my family safe?’
Go ahead and ask us today.
Then once you have a system installed, make it a habit to active your system whenever you leave your home!
