When it Comes to Shoplifting, is Your Retail Store at Risk?

Protecting Assets in Your Retail Store

When it comes to shoplifting, is your retail store at risk?

Retail theft may have a severe impact on your business! According to The National Association for Shoplifting Prevention more than $35 million worth of product is stolen from retail stores everyday.  This number is astronomical.  That is why it is important to stay aware and be prepared to stop the theft from happening in the first place.  Here at Strand Security we want to make sure our local Myrtle Beach and Maryland businesses know what it takes to win this battle. The following statistics will hopefully open your eyes; we believe every retail owner would want to know everything we are about to share with you.

Don’t be a Statistic, Protect Your Assets!

  • Over $13 billion worth of goods are stolen from retailers each year.
  • Approximately 27 million shoplifters are in our nation today.
  • Employees steal more than the customers.
  • Only 3 percent of shoplifters are professionals. Shoplifting is not usually planned out.
  • Shoplifting can account for about a third of inventory shrinkage.

Protect your Assets by Knowing the Profile of a Shoplifter

There is no actual physical profile of a typical shoplifter. They come in all ages and genders, sizes and shapes, and all ethnicities. Shoplifters steal for many different reasons; some steal out of necessity, some out of peer pressure, desire, and some because it may be a business transaction.

Although you may not be able to pinpoint a shoplifter by their physical appearance, here are some traits and signs to look for in a potential shoplifter…

  • Appear nervous
  • Wanders the store without buying
  • Returns to the store repeatedly
  • Avoids eye contact
  • Constant watch over store employees

Once you understands the signs, you can now train your employee’s in general shoplifting prevention techniques.

Have your staff

  • Greet all customers.
  • Stay alert.
  • Ask lingering customers if they need help.
  • Be aware of where shoplifting is most likely to occur in the store.

Protect Your Assets by Reducing Employee Theft

It is unfortunate that when we hire people we think we can trust, that trust gets broken. Employee theft plays a large role in retail loss.  The following ideas and solutions will help prevent or at least, reduce in house theft.

  • Make periodic unannounced visits to your retail store.
  • Spot-check inventory and cash registers.
  • Use a POS system (inventory-tracking system) that tracks inventory automatically.
  • Train employees on theft prevention, both employee theft and shoplifting.  Let the employees know the company is prepared to detect either.
  • Encourage anonymous tips.

When it comes to shoplifting, is your retail store at risk?

Protect Your Assets and Prevent Shoplifting

  1. Hire Secret Shoppers that blend in with other shoppers.
  2. Video surveillance cameras.  Place cameras at all entrances, cash registers, and throughout the store.  You can’t put cameras inside to the dressing rooms, but you can put them just outside.  If security systems are put in place, you will protect your investment, your employees, customers and your overall sense of well-being.
  3. Electronic Article Surveillance is a method that attaches special tags (security tags) to the merchandise.  If merchandise exists the store without being removed by a store associate, an alarm will sound.
  4. Maximize Visibility by using mirrors to eliminate any blind spots.  Also, use shorter cases to make sure merchandise is completely visible.  Keep your shop tidy and neat, so at one glance you can tell if something is missing or out of place.
  5. Limit access to display cases and dressing rooms by locking them.  This requires associates to be present when opened.
  6. Implement a bag check policy, which does not allow customers to bring bags into the dressing room area.
  7. Create a shoplifting policy and post that policy publicly. Post signs with statements such as “SHOPLIFTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED”.

Don’t let shoplifting have a negative impact on your business!

Keeping Your Teenage Driver Safe on the Roads

Are You Worried About Your Teen on the Road?

Teenage Drivers - DOn't let yours become a statistic! Use Vehicle Tracker from Honeywell Totla Connect to track your teenager!

‘Slow down, the music’s too loud, put your seatbelt on, watch the road, don’t even think about touching your phone, pay attention!’

The list can go on and on, right?

We all wonder if what we teach our children about driving is enough. Even if we do, will they follow through with everything we taught them? The statistics for teenage driving (and the danger it produces) are staggering in this country. Strand Security wants to make sure all of our teens in Myrtle Beach are safe while on the road.

Let’s take a look at statistics and figure out why you may choose to “track your teen and stay in the driver’s seat

Teenage Drivers Are Not the Best Drivers!

The leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States is motor vehicle crashes.

● 1 in 5 teenage drivers has an accident in their first year of driving.

● Over 74,000 young people die or are injured each year by not wearing seat belts.

● Two-thirds of teen passenger deaths are in vehicles driven by other teenagers.

● Over one-third of teen fatal crashes are speed related.

● A 16 year old is 20 times more likely to be killed in a crash than an adult.

Teenagers Are at High Risk For Accidents!

● The risk of a crash is higher with 16-19 year olds than any other age group. Drivers ages 16-19 are 3 times more likely to be in a fatal crash than drivers over the age of 20. This is because teens are more likely to underestimate dangerous situations

● Teens that drive with other teenagers in the vehicle and the presence of male passengers increases the risky behavior (go figure!)

● Those that do not wear seatbelts. Did you know that teens have the lowest rate of seat belt use over all other age groups?

● Drivers with inexperience

● New drivers allowed to drive at night; from 2012 statistics we know that 49% of teen fatal crashes occurred between midnight and 3 AM.

Keeping your teenage driver safe on the roads

Preventing Accidents in Teenage Driving

So how can we prevent accidents before they happen, and make our teens safer on the roads?

Seat Belts!
Research shows that seat belts reduce serious crash-related deaths and injuries by about half.

Practice

  • Practice and discuss certain situations.
  • Practice in all weather conditions.
  • Practice nighttime driving
  • Prepare with proper supervision such as a parent.

Parents Play a Key Role in Preventing Teenage Accidents

  • Discuss all rules of driving and the consequences for not following them.
  • Establish a Teen-Parent Driving Contract that puts the rules in writing and sets expectations.
Here is an example contract to help guide you…
  • Attend a drivers education program.
  • Share driving situations with other parents with teenagers. It takes only a second to share information and may save a life.

The above information is a useful tool to help start off with a new teen driver. However, at Strand Security we like to take it one step farther with Honeywell Total Connect™. This is a tracking service we provide that will allow you to “track your teens and stay in the driver’s seat”

  • Honeywell Total Connect™ allows you to know exactly where your teen’s car is, where it is going and how fast they are driving. It will assure you when they have arrived at their destination, where they have stopped and for how long.
  • You can receive texts or email alerts anytime and anywhere from any smart device. This allows you to know of any exceeded speed limits or predetermined geographic boundaries.
  • Locates missing vehicles in the event of car trouble and emergencies.
  • Ensures that teens are driving only where permitted.
  • You will have real-time GPS location information.

Honeywell Total Connect™ allows your teen to be on the go and you to know!

Restaurant Security Systems – How To Protect Your Assets

Restaurant Security Systems

Restaurant Security Systems

We at Strand Security, as business owners, know first-hand that opening a business is no small feat. When you open a business, it is like gaining a new family member; you want to protect it and nurture it and watch it grow. Whether it is a security company like ours, or a restaurant; the concerns we have are very similar. We at Strand Security would like to share some industry-specific tips for security systems for restaurants, as many of our customers here in the Myrtle Beach area are restaurant owners. We know there is huge competition in the restaurant industry in Myrtle Beach. Therefore, protecting every aspect of the business is important.

Having a security system, including cameras helps prevent (or catch in the act)

● Employee theft

● Customer behavior

● Vandalism

● Burglaries

● Suspicious Activity

Restaurant Security Systems - How To Protect Your Assets

Monitor Your Restaurant Staff

Running a restaurant is complicated!
You have staff including waiters, cooks, managers, bartenders and more.

How many staff members handle cash and credit cards? Every waiter and bartender are constantly handling your money, right?

Unfortunately, it is far too easy for money to be stolen in the restaurant business. Annual revenue loss due to employee theft can shut down a small business. That is why we highly recommend installing security cameras as a precautionary measure.

  1. We recommend a camera facing each cash register throughout the restaurant.
  2. Install cameras in the bar of your restaurant. Unfortunately, not every bartender goes by your restaurant rules. Whatever rules you’ve set for your bartenders; no to drinking during the shift and no to giving out free drinks to their favorite customers, with cameras you can monitor and then enforce your rules. Alcohol has a large markup and that is money out of your pocket if you aren’t aware of what’s going on.
  3. Cameras in the kitchen! Are you sure your cooks are living up to local regulations? Are they cleaning properly? Are they preparing food properly? The last thing any restaurant owner wants, is to be written up and publicly humiliated in the local paper for bad kitchen habits. That alone could destroy your business, never mind being shut down by the health department. Cameras will help enforce regulations.

Hopefully, you do not need to use the security cameras to catch your employees in acts of defiance. But when it comes down to it, it is better to be safe than sorry. You will also have proof which will help you should you need to fire someone. One more benefit; when people know they are being watched, they are less likely to act on impulses.

Monitor Your Customers

Just like you need to monitor your staff, you will also want to monitor your serving area and your customers.

  • We recommend installing cameras in the bar area! Cameras may help resolve a dispute with an unruly customer, whether they had one too many drinks, or get in a fight. Having cameras in the bar area will definitely help to protect your bartender.
  • Cameras throughout the dining area will help you monitor wait staff and customer alike. How often do people dine and dash (leave without paying) or steal tips left on the table? You will know exactly how often, if you have cameras. You know how they say the customer is always right; a security camera may be your only way to prove they are wrong!

Parking Lot Security

Who knows what is lurking outside after the lights are turned off and the doors are locked, right? Parking lots are scary places.

You and your closing staff will feel more secure knowing there are cameras at every angle on the outside of your restaurant, as well as an alarm system.

Monitor from Afar

Did you know you can watch your employees and customers from the comfort of your home if you have Honeywell Total Connect™? You can monitor your business, your employees and your customers on your favorite device, wherever you are.

Go home, take a break!

If security systems are put in place, you will protect your investment, your employees, customers and your overall sense of well-being.

Do I Need Security Cameras?

We hear this question all the time. “Do I really need security cameras?” and “Is having my security alarm system not enough on its own?” The answer might surprise you. Having a security system is a huge deterrent to would-be thieves so yes, in theory, it’s all you’ll need. However, and of course there’s a however, security cameras add additional value to your system and once you understand what that value is, we guarantee you’ll want them!

Security System Value

A security system linked to a monitoring station gives you the following value

» Your home and/or business is protected and monitored even when you aren’t there

I should go without saying that your security is only as safe and your system only as good as the company you are working with. If you are new to security systems, read this article on how to find a good security company to work with and the signs to look for when you interact with different companies to see if it’s a good fit.

Security Camera Added Value

By installing security cameras along with your system, they can add this value to your existing system. Here are 5 reasons why security cameras rock and once you have them, we know you’ll never want to live without ever again!

They

» Record video stream of what’s happening outside of your home to catch would-be thieves

» Aid Law Enforcement with identifying and arresting a suspect if a break-in did happen

» Live stream video of your pet (or petsitter) while you aren’t home

» Live stream video of your kids and babysitter to ensure their safety and monitor behavior

Security Cameras for Business

It goes without saying that adding security cameras to your business provides another whole level of security!

‌• cash registers

‌• employee behavior

‌• customer behavior

‌• merchandise

‌• stockroom

‌• staff lunch room

‌• parking lots

and much much more, leaving you with either live streaming and recordings, or recordings of each feed.

How To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning In Your Home or Business

How To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in your Home or Business

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

We at Strand Security always keep your security and safety in mind as we offer new services to our residential and commercial clients. We currently offer services like

• Residential Security Alarm Systems
• Commercial Security Alarm Systems
• 24Hour Burglar & Fire Alarm Monitoring
• IP Digital Surveillance Cameras
• Honeywell Total Connect Remote Services
• Audio/Video Solutions
• Home Automation
• Home Theater
We also get questions about ‘carbon monoxide’ and how to protect again carbon monoxide poisoning which accounts for about an average of 430 deaths per year in the USA.
Would you like to keep those you love safe from carbon monoxide poisoning?
We have the answers on how to do just that, of course!

Carbon Monoxide; What Is It Exactly?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels.
One of our local TV stations in Myrtle Beach did a story on Carbon Monoxide Poisoning recently, and they have some good information as they talk about ways to avoid CO contact:

  1. Install a CO alarm.*
  2. Never use portable fuel-burning camping equipment inside a home.
  3. Never burn charcoal inside a home, garage, vehicle, or tent.
  4. Never leave a car running in an attached garage, even with the garage door open.
  5. Never use gas appliances such as ranges, ovens, or clothes dryers to heat your home.
  6. Never operate unvented fuel-burning appliances in any room where people are sleeping.
  7. During home renovations, be sure that appliance vents and chimneys are not blocked. Make sure appliances are in proper working order when renovations are complete.

*Note that the FIRST thing on this list is installing a CO alarm and that’s where we come in!

HOw To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in your Home or Business

Carbon Monoxide Monitoring

Just like your home and business are monitored and protected with Honeywell Total Connect™, by hooking up the Carbon Monoxide sensors right to your security alarm, the carbon monoxide levels in your home or business will be monitored as well!

Many people install carbon monoxide monitors that you plug-in to the wall and while these are great (it’s better to have those than no sensors at all!), they do not work all of the time and they do not have the ability to call for outside help when needed if you are incapacitated.

Because as we read on the Honeywell Total Connect™ website:

System Sensor carbon monoxide (CO) detectors provide the highest level of CO protection available. Our system-connected devices enable 24/7 central station monitoring that ensures occupants or building management will be alerted if the detector goes into alarm, is disabled, or has reached its six-year end-of-life and needs to be replaced. Furthermore, this system monitoring provides an extra level of protection in cases when occupants are unable to respond to the alarm.

Prevent a Tragedy and Get Carbon Monoxide System Sensors Installed

It’s fairly easy and so worth it to add these sensors to an existing system to keep your family and staff safe. Come talk to us if you think we can help you with carbon monoxide prevention through monitoring.

How Safe and Secure Are Your Home and Business?

How Safe and Secure are your Home and Business?

Safety First

Where have you heard this phrase ‘Safety First’? We think it’s everywhere. At schools, day camps, day care, at work…

How about your home? Is your home ‘safe’?

Did you know that many accidents happen at home? Did you think that home is safest place for babies, toddlers, kids and adults alike?

Think again!

“Did you know that more than 18,000 Americans die every year from injuries that take place in the home? This makes it the second most common location for such fatalities. Why are home injuries so prevalent? Most Americans are unaware that they are able to prevent such accidents.”  via A Secure Life

Prevention starts with identifying the dangers, then improving those hazards, as well as monitoring what’s going on while you aren’t there (keeping an eye on teens, babysitters, older adults and pets!)

Accidents in the Workplace

The same way you might have thought that home is a safe place, many people assume that they are safe at work. Work-related injuries are prevalent however. Here is a list of the top 10 most common workplace injuries!  Preventing work injuries will always be a two way street for both employers and employees.

How Safe and Secure Are Your Home and Business?

There are many ways you can prevent injuries at home and at your place of business.

We found this helpful article about How a Remote Security Camera System Can Help Your Business. They include the following three reasons security cameras can help keep your business secure.

Security Cameras will

✔ Prevent theft and break-ins
✔ Improve employee performance
✔ Ensure employee safety
In one of our own articles we read that security cameras can

✔ Monitor Staff

✔ Monitor Customers

✔ Monitor Property

thus adding to that layer of protection for your staff!

Home Sweet Home

Whether you protect yourself, your staff and your loved ones with a security system and security cameras, or not, all comes down to your level of comfort as well as your pocketbook!

3 Ways Camera Surveillance Protects Your Small Business

Protect Your Small Business With Security Cameras

How Are You Protecting Your Business Investments?

As small business owners in Myrtle Beach, we know first-hand that start up costs for a business are nothing to laugh about! You will spend money on all sorts of things you couldn’t have imagined, unless you’d owned a business before, and many first-timers are surprised by bills they just didn’t expect.

However, now that you are a small business owner and you’ve invested money, time and effort into getting a business off the ground, how are you protecting that investment?

Really… how are you doing it?

  • Do you have an alarm system?
  • Do you have good locks?
  • Do you do background checks on your employees?
  • Do you have security cameras?

If you do not have any of these safety features to safeguard your investment, you run the risk of losing it all! Now that’s something none of us want, right?

How Can Cameras Help Protect Your Small Business?

“Cameras are your extra set of eyes when you aren’t able to be in 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 places all at once!” Even if you are a very hands-on business owner who works hard and is involved in the daily workings of your business, there are times you need to step away from the showroom, the store or the office. You also need to sleep, we assume.

Having surveillance cameras set up to monitor your business makes great ‘cents’.

How does having a camera surveillance system protect your business investment?
Here are three ways you can protect your small business:

  1. Monitor customers – This is especially true if you own a store, showroom or restaurant. By having cameras installed, not only can you monitor your customers’ behavior (theft prevention), you can also protect yourself from any (potential) lawsuits by having video proof of unfortunate events, if that ever were to happen.
  2. Monitor staff – The same way your use cameras to monitor your customers, you can also use surveillance cameras to monitor your own staff! In a town like Myrtle Beach, there are a lot of seasonal jobs available. Many small business owners rely on seasonal staff who might just be looking for short-term employment. It will be imperative to monitor newly hired recruits for theft and proper, professional conduct. If you suspect an employee of theft, surveillance tapes can offer the proof to help prosecute and convict them.
  3. Monitor your property – We know business owners need sleep. You can’t be at your place of business 24/7, even if you live where you work, you still need to meet with suppliers, customers and go out every once in a while. With installed cameras, you can monitor from afar and see happens when you aren’t there. Lots of things can happen and do. Break-ins, fires, vandalism, and more.3 ways camera surveillance protects your small business

Protect Before You Regret!

Don’t delay in installing a security system, if you do not currently have one. If you do have a system, but without cameras, consider upgrading ASAP. We talk to our customers often, and we KNOW having cameras installed, and security signs displayed, can actually prevent unpleasant events!

Hiring a Babysitter Shouldn’t Stress You Out!

Hiring a babysitter should relief some of your parenting stress!

Hiring a Babysitter Shouldn't Stress You Out!

There comes a time for every new parent to hire a babysitter and leave their first-born child for the very first time! Just writing this sentence bring back memories…and anxiety! I remember that day way-back-when so well. Just thinking about that first time of leaving my child and going on a date to Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach gives me anxiety. It’s a super fun place to hang out – really, there not a single place in Myrtle Beach that’s NOT fun, yet I couldn’t have any fun…I was stressed out and felt guilty about leaving our son and I kept calling home for updates on the baby.

Often, a first babysitter is a family member; maybe a grandparent or aunt or uncle. Even though this first-time event should be exciting, it also could be stressful. If you are lucky enough to be able to leave your child with a trusted family member it might make things much easier to handle. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have family nearby!

As child number two and maybe number three are welcomed to the world, leaving multiple children of different ages with a sitter every now and then, might seem a necessity to keep sanity. 😉

If you are lucky enough to have a found ‘the perfect sitter’ the first time around, you are definitely in the minority! Many people struggle to find good babysitters and when they do, they hold on to them – this mom speaks from experience! It might take many tries to find the perfect fit and while you ‘try out a new sitter’, stress can get the best of you!

Therefore, hiring a new babysitter to relief parenting stress can in itself bring on …more stress!

How can we help you solve this problem?

We offer Honeywell Total Connect™ services for your home! In an earlier article, we joked around a bit with this concept, explaining how fun it can be to check on your dog while you aren’t home as Honeywell Total Connect™ lets you look inside your home with up to six cameras, real-time. We showed several videos of ‘dogs gone wild’.

All joking put aside, Honeywell Total Connect™ can be the peace of mind you need when hiring a babysitter – or nanny or housekeeper.

You will be able to watch in real time, what’s going on inside your home right from your Smartphone or mobile device. You can see the interactions between your babysitter and your child(ren)!

At the same time, we offer another service that you might find useful when employing help in your home.

We offer C.O.P.S monitoring service to our clients; this is a 24 hour service designed to help you, or your babysitter, in time of need! This would include a fire, burglary or medical emergency. Knowing that the necessary help is available with the press of one button, should give you additional peace of mind.

COPS Monitoring specializes in many types of alarm monitoring and delivers professional service with industry-leading response times.

NOTE: The ‘industry-leading response time’ bit is very important, as this will allow you, or your babysitter not only to talk to someone in time of crisis, but also get the help you need in the shortest amount of time possible! We are very proud to partner with C.O.P.S. and to offer this service to our customers.

With Honeywell Total Connect™ you will be able to watch in real time, what's going on inside your home right from your Smartphone or mobile device. You can see the interactions between your babysitter and your child(ren)!

Choose the right system, choose the right company!

We know there are many security companies out there. In Myrtle Beach alone there are several companies to choose from. Make sure to do your research before hiring someone. Installing a security system in your home (or business) is an important decision to make; be well informed and well prepared to hire the best!

Come talk to us to find out if we might be a good fit for your needs!
