The Best Time of Year to Adjust Your Thermostat is Now

Winter, Spring Summer or Fall…🎶

Who doesn’t know this James Taylor song? It does not matter what season it is, adjusting your thermostat at least 4 x per year, to work with the season, is always a great idea.

Therefore, the best time to adjust your thermostat is… now!

adjust your thermostat this fall

Why Should You Adjust Your Thermostat?

As seasons change, so does the barometric pressure, average temperatures and humidity levels. Weather changes rapidly and seasonally. Even in South Carolina where the weather seems to always sway between warm, hot and super hot, it is important to adjust your thermostat according to the seasons.

Before you do, grab your utility bill!

You will want to know

  1. What your overall usage is (electric or propane – to cool and heat your home)
  2. Your monthly spent
  3. Who is always cold or warm in the house?
  4. Who in your household adjusts the thermostat most, and when?

Did you know that setting your thermostat at 1 or 2 degrees higher (in summer) and lower (in winter) can lower your overall utility cost? It’s important to understand what you are paying for!

Whom to Adjust the Thermostat in Your Home For?

It might seem obvious, but here is a good guide to understanding who should adjust your thermostat, or to whom to look to adjust your thermostat. It is usually someone who spends a lot of time at home, or someone who is frail, old or sick!

  1. Stay-at-home-parent or work-from-home adult. The person who spends the MOST time at home should be considered.
  2. Infants and small children. If there are infants or kids in the home, what helps them regulate their temperature? Are they always complaining that they are hot or cold? Do they feel hot or cold after a nap? Are they asking for extra blankets or jackets?
  3. Older Adults. An elderly person might be cold in the winter due to bad circulation and get overheated due to their age in the summer.
  4. Obese family member. An overweight person in your household might also want to control the thermostat. It’s important they have a say in regulating the temperature in your home.
  5. Anyone with a chronic disease. If there is someone in your household who is taking medication for a chronic disease, please adjust your thermostat according to their needs.
  6. Pets. Pets can get overheated if the air conditioner is not adjusted for them. If you are not home, but your pet is home all day, make sure you know your pet is comfortable.

Keeping an eye on those at home in-real-time, with security cameras is a great way to assure the temperature is set right!

Things to Avoid When Adjusting the Thermostat in Your Home

Here are some things you should not do when it comes to adjusting your thermostat.

  • Ignore a broken thermostat
  • Ignore a broken heating and cooling system
  • Let guests fiddle with your thermostat
  • Set it too cold or too hot for the season just to try save a few dollars
  • Fail to adjust your thermostat when you go on vacation
  • Forget to adjust the thermostat for the next season
  • Never look at your utility bill
  • Ignore a higher-than-usual utility bill
  • Fail to service your heating and cooling system
  • Fail to change out filters to your system
  • Open windows and doors when the system is running

Automate To Dominate Your Home Thermostat Settings!

The BEST way to keep as many people in your household comfortable AND at the same time be energy efficient it to let smart technology help you out! Strand Security works with brands like URC and Honeywell who can take a lot of the guesswork out of this task. Use thermostat automation to dominate your home thermostat!

Adjust Your Thermostat Now

If you can’t remember the last time you checked your thermostat, do it today. Have a family meeting and involve everyone. Ask them how they feel and if they are ever hot or cold.

If your family can’t agree on a temperature that is ‘just right’ consider adding ceiling fans to bedrooms to cool off someone who is often hot, and buying robes and winter slippers for someone who is frequently cold!

Simple changes like that might make a big difference in the comfort you get at home.

After-School Home Safety Tips To Keep Families Safe and Protected

after school safety tips for families

Kids are going back to school and that means parents who work outside of the home, will have help with caring for their kids after-school.

Whether it’s a babysitter, family member, neighbor or whether your child teenager is old enough to come home to an empty house, it’s important to go voer home safety rules every so often. Take the month of August to reevaluate your family safety plan.

Being aware of potential danger is the first stop to preventing harm!

The Ride (or Walk) Home

School bus safety and rules come from the school district. Take the time to go over the school bus rules with your child so that they know what to expect. It is important to tell your child(ren) to let you know that the ride to and from school isn’t safe any longer for a variety of reasons (bullying, unsafe driver, unruly students, heat or cold)

If you child walks home alone, or with a group of friends, make sure you have a system set up to check on them each day right after they arrive home. Go over the rules (no lingering, don’t bring friends home) so that you both know what to expect!

Kids Home Alone

When is your child ready to stay home alone after school? It depends on each child as well as the area you live in, technology you currently have installed in your home, the maturity level of the child and the state you live in (law)

Read more about how to know your child is safe to stay home alone after school.

If you think your child might be ready to be home alone without a babysitter or after-school care, read this!

Babysitters, Tutors and Neighbors, Oh My!

If you do need to give a babysitter, tutor or neighbor access to your home, it’s important to have a security system installed with a mobile app so that you can have a visual of what’s going on at home!

Hiring a babysitter should not stress you out , instead focus on creating a back-to-school family safety plan!

Strangers at the Door!

Tips about how to handle a stranger at the door, from a previous article here on the Strand Security Blog. We suggest you share the following with your teenager who might be home alone!

1 Take a look at the Stranger.

Try to get a look at who is knocking on your door. You may need to find a window in the house that makes your front door visible or use the peephole if you have one. You must have a way to see who is at the front door without opening it!

2 Keep Your Phone on You.

Have your phone visibly on you for the knocker to see. If a situation should occur you will have easy access to call 911.

3 Call Out to Someone in the House.

Can someone get the door?” or  “I’ll get it

Maybe you are alone but the knocking stranger does not have to know that! Make it evident that there are others in the house with you. This can deter any planned unwanted activities.

4 Do Not Ignore Them.

Sometimes the first reaction is to just ignore a stranger’s knock all together. However, in doing so, you are silently announcing that your house is empty and now is a good time to break in. So, it is better to say something no matter the time of day. A majority of break-ins occur during the day when people are thought to be at work.

5 Request Their Identity.

If a utility worker knocks at your door, ask for them to prove their identity with the company they work for. You can always call the subject’s company to check if they have sent someone to your house.

6 Do Not Share Information.

Strangers may take advantage of you by saying they are in trouble, hurt or in need of help. As much as we all would like to help our fellow citizens, it may be a better choice to let them know you are calling 911 and help is on the way.

Technology can help in this situation! Read more about which devices can help here.

Cyber Safety at Home

THIS is the time to talk to your kids and teenagers about online safety: cyber security! Not when they start to act strange, not when they are upset, scared or sad. Talk to them before leaving them home alone for extended periods of time!

Cyber safety and security should take an important, prominent place in your back-to-school family safety plan.

Set rules, boundaries and check in often!

House Rules

Last but not least… house rules are house rules whether you are home as a parent, or not! Make sure you instill a sense of responsibility in your child or teenager, to build mutual trust. Respect goes both ways. Always be sure to tell the kids you’ll be checking the cameras remotely if they are home alone. They need to know you can see them or talk with them.

Safety rules about pool usage, opening doors for strangers or or operating dangerous tools are all important enough to warrant a frequent reminder!

Your house, your rules, and that includes rules for friends and rules for pets, too!

After-School Activities!

We wish you, your family, your kids a fantastic 2021-2022 school year. We are here to help you navigate it all. If you need smarthome solutions to keep your family safe, need (additional) security cameras, or a panic button for your employees or elderly parents, we can help you with all of that!

If you are thinking a home theater would be great to have at home, we can help with the design, installation and servicing for that as well! Just give us a call!

The Latest Security Technology to Be Thankful For!

thankful for security technology

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

We want to wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving. No matter how different this year’s celebration looks due to the pandemic, if you are with family and healthy, you are lucky and blessed!

We are thankful for so many people in our business.

We are thankful for our staff and our suppliers, and we are thankful for you, our customer! As we come to the end of a year-long celebration of our 10th anniversary, we are so very grateful for the ability to continue to serve the Grand Strand community of South Carolina and keep residents in Horry County and Georgetown County safe and secure!

Today, let’s look at some of the latest security technology we are grateful for during this crazy 2020 year.

Smarthome Technology

We love our URC smarthome technology. We have installed numerous systems like this during this past year in the Myrtle Beach area, on the Grand Strand in both homes as well as commercial locations.

The possibilities are endless with URC technology and we are grateful to be able to help solve problems for our clients with this amazing system and related products.

Learn more about URC here.

Remote Access To Your Home Security System

If nothing else, we’ve all learned to “let go” this year! Many of us have had to go to work and leave teenagers and kids at home for remote schooling whether they we ready for this, or not. Some of us have elderly relatives who are at home in self-imposed isolation to stay safe from COVID-19 and because of all this, how thankful we are for remote access to our home security cameras and systems!

No matter where you need to be, the ones that are left at home can be reached in an instant with remote access to your home security system, how comforting is that as a parent or caregiver?

Voice Activation

Last but not least, now that we know through science how germs are spread, using voice activation to control your home, your smarthome, gives you an added buffer of security and safety against an invisible enemy, COVID-19.

No more touching and retouching light switches, curtains, temperature controls, garage door openers, windows, locks, sound systems, home theater controls… With URC smarthome technology everything can be controlled by voice and thus by default becomes touch-free and germ-free!

We are thankful to be able to offer this to our Strand Security customers, both homeowners and families, as well as our commercial customers like restaurants and Grand Strand business owners who need a new way to keep customers and staff safe!

Strand Security

We Are Thankful For Our Grand Strand Community

We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here! We don’t just work on the Grand Strand , we live here, too. We are thankful to be surrounded by businesses who, like us, care about their customers’ safety and security, and we are glad to be working on several URC integration projects right now to give those businesses that added buffer of safety.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Strand Security to you and yours!

10 Reasons To Love Monitored Security Systems

Monitored Security Systems.

A home security system can stand between a homeowner and a happy outcome when disaster strikes. On the South Carolina coastline in the Grand Strand area, a disaster might mean the occurrence of a hurricane, or a flood.

In other parts of the country, disaster might include tornadoes or earthquakes.

For everyone, no matter whether you live in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach or elsewhere, a fire or medical emergency can quickly turn into a disaster if help is not immediately dispatched.

Today, let’s celebrate 10 reasons to love monitored security systems.

1 Get Immediate Help When Intruders Enter Your Home

First and foremost, when an intruder, thief, or burglar invades your home they have nothing but bad things in mind. If you are home when this happens, you are now in physical danger.

With a monitored security system, help is dispatched whether you are able to communicate with emergency services, or if you are incapacitated!

2 Access To Medical Assistance When Needed

The same is true when someone in your home has a medical emergency. With just the push of a button you can summon help! Seconds can make the difference between a good outcome and a disastrous one especially when the emergency is a matter of life or death like during a heart attack, a near drowning or a lightning strike.

3 In Case of Fire

Do you sleep soundly at night? What happens when your fire alarm goes off? Do you call the fire station, rescue your family, rescue your pets, rescue your belongings? What if you ONLY had to think about rescuing your family and pets, knowing that the fire department is already on their way? That is what happens when you have a monitored system! The fire department is dispatched while you are getting out of the house!

Time is of the essence during a fire emergency.  A monitored system will give you that little bit of extra time!

4 Alert To Possible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning is deadly – and silent. Installing carbon monoxide detectors is step one to home safety, having these alarms hardwired to your monitored alarm so when you are incapacitated due to carbon monoxide poisoning, is even better!

5 Protect Your Assets

With a monitored system, the burden of always looking over your shoulder for danger is not on you. Having a second set of eyes on your home, your car, your pool area, your business is the best way to protect assets you care about.

6 Remote Access to Your Home Security Cameras

With monitored alarm systems like Honeywell Total Connect or Alarm.com you also have remote access to your home security cameras, allowing your to monitor what is going on in real time.

7 Immediate access to you Teenager, Babysitter, Pet or Elderly Parent

With a monitored security system even if you can’t reach someone at home during an emergency, the monitoring company will do their best to reach someone or send help immediately!

8 Save on Homeowners Insurance

Did you know that most insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who have a monitored system because they know that a monitored home is a safer home?

9 Peace of Mind When Home

A monitored security system gives you peace of mind when you are home – alone or with your family. You can go about your day and know that if someone enters your home unexpectedly, or is a fire starts, that help is on the way! this is especially true for night time!

10 Peace of Mind When Traveling

At the same time, peace of mind comes when traveling if you have a monitored security system. The monitoring company will replay any issues to you in real time, no matter where you are, as long as you can be reached by phone! How awesome is that?

Does Your Home Need A Security and Safety Tune Up?

home audit security and safety

Conduct a Home Audit To Get a Security and Safety Tune Up!

How secure and safe is your home for your elderly relatives, your teenagers, your baby or your pets?

If you aren’t sure what to answer, maybe it’s time for a home audit!

An audit is an official inspection.

To conduct a home audit for security and safety means conducting a thorough check up on the overall security and safety of the inside and outside of your home, identifying any problem areas to address.

Have you ever done a home audit?

This article will tell you how to do a home audit for security and safety.

Weekend Project To Make Your Home More Secure!

Are you ready to make your home more secure?

Here is how to do your audit.

  1. Create a spreadsheet, or use a clipboard with paper to document your findings.
  2. Find a partner to help you!
  3. Divide your home in sections.
  4. Start from the bottom and go up, or start at the top and go down, or start on the inside and go out.
  5. Check for possible security issues; check windows latches, deadbolts and locks, hatches, screens. Push, pull and pretend to break-in to your own home!
  6. Check the location of your security cameras if you have any, and look for blindspots.
  7. If you do not have security cameras, note what areas in your home you might need them installed.
  8. Test your home security system.
  9. At night, check all lights and sensors.
  10. Outdoors, check the entrance to garage and position of bushes and trees near the home that could be used as hiding spots
  11. Check your outdoor shed, and any equipment. Is it secure?

With the findings of this audit, make a plan to update or replace broken locks, replace burnt out light bulbs, adjust sensors and talk to an expert about security cameras.

Weekend Project to Make Your Home Safer!

The same way you conducted a home audit for security, you can conduct a home audit for safety.

Get started the same way with either  a spreadsheet or a clipboard with paper to document your findings.

Then do this:

  1. Find a partner to help you!
  2. Divide your home in sections.
  3. Start from the bottom and go up, the top and go down, or the inside and go out.
  4. Look at your home from the perspective of being elderly and less-mobile, a teenager, or a crawling baby.
  5. Check for possible safety issues; sharp objects, fire hazards and places someone could trip and fall.
  6. Test smoke detectors and CO detectors.
  7. Make an appointment to have your chimney swept.
  8. Kitchen are often a safety hazard! Check for a fire extinguisher.
  9. Check your home for things left out that could pose a safety risk to elderly family members, teenagers, small kids and pets: matches, knives, guns, cleaning agents, prescription drugs, alcohol, poison and more. Note the location of these items!
  10. If you have a pool, make sure all gates lock securely and you have a pool alarm that works.

NOTE: This is not a complete list. Be a home detective and really look around for falling and tripping hazards and bend down and look up for things that could be hiding in plain sight.

Make a list or repairs and spend a weekend completing them.

Implement Changes and Be Safe and Secure in Your Home

While small changes are just that, small changes to your home for security and safety reason could end up saving your life of that of a person in your family.

You never know what might happen!

Home Safety and security first!

Let us know if you need help with securing your home.
We install alarm systems, security cameras and complete smarthome systems to help you keep those you love safe.

The Best Home Security Tips for Homebound Seniors

homebound seniors security tips

While we as Americans and world citizens are currently (mostly) homebound ourselves due to government restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 Pandemic, many of our seniors have been homebound for a lot longer.

Do you have an elderly family member who lives alone?

Have you given their continued safety enough consideration?

In this article, we will give you the best home security tips for homebound seniors! Please share with those you love.

Who is Considered a Homebound Senior?

The definition of a homebound senior:

being homebound or housebound means an individual is unable to leave their home without difficulty, and due to this difficulty, generally does not leave their home. It is usually due to advanced age, illness, or a disability.

Often, seniors deal not only with their advanced age, but they also have illnesses or disabilities that would prevent them from leaving their homes.

How To Keep a Homebound Senior Safe

The best way to keep a homebound senior safe is to create a safety care plan with all parties involved.

Who needs to be included in this security and safety plan?

  • the senior(s)
  • adult children
  • primary physician
  • home healthcare workers
  • home care workers

While this plan most often focusses on physical health; making sure meds are taken, doctor appointments are kept and food is delivered, cooked and eaten, there has to be ONE central command center, so to speak.

Once a plan has been formulated, it’s time to put it into action.

Tracking Progress and Safety

While the senior in your life might or might not have access and the ability to use technology, the care team certainly does.

We found several great apps to check out to coordinate efforts to keep the senior healthy and safe.

We liked these two:

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Buddy

The Alzheimer’s Association, a leader in action and awareness around the disease, developed this “caregiver buddy” app to help caregivers manage their personal stress, navigate family conflict and reach a 24/7 helpline.

The app includes features like daily care tips for tasks related to hygiene and meal times, and fun activities that will stimulate the body and mind of someone living with dementia. It also covers how to cope with new and sometimes overwhelming behaviors, like aggression or hallucination.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Buddy is available for free on iPhone or Android.

Caring Bridge

Communication is critical when dividing caregiving duties among multiple people — and that’s where CaringBridge can help. CaringBridge connects several caregivers through one app, allowing several people to keep track of appointments, changes in health and other essential information.

Users can also send each other inspiring messages and motivation through the app, which really helps pull together a team of caregivers in the toughest moments.

CaringBridge is available for free on iPhone or Android.

Home Security Tips for Seniors

If the senior in your life lives at home, here are the best home security tips we’ve found to protect your senior. If the senior lives with you and your family, we recommend you read this.

Immediate Access to Emergency

This is the number one concern so set up your senior with a panic button so that help is on the way quickly. It could save their life!

Fire Safety

If the senior in your life is still doing some home cooking, it might be time to install some additional safety measures.

Start with this checklist of prevention tips, and move onto these types of devices, if needed!

Then invest in an automatic stove turn-off device before the first fire even starts.

Security Cameras and Smart Technology

If you can’t be with them all the time, the closest, or second-best option is to install security cameras in your senior’s home. Both Alarm.com and Honeywell Total Connect offer apps with smarthome technology to keep an eye on your senior. While this is something the senior has to agree to, it might give all of the family peace of mind!

Install and Teach Your Senior To Use The Peephole

This goes without saying, and seniors might need to hear this more than once; not everyone who comes to their door is up to good. Remind your senior to not open the door to strangers.

Keep Windows and Doors Locked When at Home!

While fresh air is great, open doors and windows could potentially invite unwanted visitors. We don’t recommend scaring your senior, but common sense should prevail. When living alone, they need to be aware of doors and windows and not leave them opened and unattended for long periods of time!

Alert the Senior of Phone Scams Targeting Seniors

Keep this dialogue going! Local police will often warn of local scams, and putting a note near your senior’s phone might be a good start! The note should remind them to NEVER give out their Social Security number, a credit card number, or send money. When in doubt, they need to know it’s OK to disconnect the call!

How Can We Help?

We at Strand Security understand you might not live near your senior. If we can help you keep you in any way as you navigate keeping your loved one safe from a distance, do not hesitate to reach out!

10 Reasons To Love Smarthomes

smarthome Alexa Google Home

This post is the second in a year-long series of ’10 reasons to love…’ as Strand Security celebrates 10 years in business.

10 Reasons to Love the Grand Strand

What is a Smarthome?

A Smarthome is

a residence equipped with a number of devices that automate tasks normally handled by humans. Some are built into the structure itself and some added later, and homeowners operate them with voice commands or by artificial intelligence.

What Can a Smarthome Do?

A smarthome

uses internet-connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems, such as lighting and heating.

That is just the tip of the iceberg, though.

New uses, new brands, and more integrations are available every day!

Our homes are getting smarter.

10 Reasons To Love Smarthomes

While new Smarthomes are created every day, not everyone fully understands what a Smarthome can do and how it can affect daily life.

Therefore, we’ve come up with 10 reasons to love Smarthomes.

1) Smarthomes Are Brilliant

Of course, they are brilliant. Their name says it all.

This home can think and has a brain that functions to communicate with the homeowners. If that’s not brilliant, we don’t know what is!

2) Smarthomes Are Convenient

While we won’t go as far as calling people lazy, Smarthomes offer convenience to those who crave it. With just one button, one switch or one command, the homeowner can engage the home to auto-work for them.

3) We Love Smarthomes Due To Endless Integration Possibilities

Smarthome technology integrates with hundreds, if not thousands of brands. URC integrates with 100’s of brands, many brands that we offer and recommend to our customers here at Strand Security

4) We Love Smarthome Automation

Automation means that once you set something up once, that ‘action’ is remembered and can be triggered at any time by a commend. Automation means that when you get home, you can, for example, tell your home ‘I am home’ and that would trigger any automation you’ve programmed – drawing shades, changing the thermostat, locking the doors behind you etc.

5) Smarthomes Save Us Time

By virtue of automation and integration, we all save time; the Smarthome does the thinking as well as the execution.

6) Smarthomes Eliminate Redundancy

Never again draw the shades. Never again have to touch a light switch. Never again have to lock (or forget to lock) the door behind you. Set it up once and it’s done!

7) Smarthomes Help Those Who Are Less Able-bodied

If you or someone you love lives with a disability, or is elderly and not active, having a Smarthome can be a gamechanger to being independent! Especially if that person has limited physical ability.

8) Smarthomes Make Our Homes More Energy Efficient

By automating lights, thermostats, and window shades, your home becomes energy efficient. You will save money on your electric bill just by being smart!

9) Smarthomes Give Our Home a Personality

Your home might be quirky, or stern, or persistent. If you set your automation right, your home will have a personality!

10) Smarthomes Allow Us To Control Our Home With Just One Remote

The best part of having a Smarthome besides ‘peace of mind’ is the ability to control your home from one remote! No more TV controls, thermostats controls, light switches and keys… One remote can do EVERYTHING for you.

How to Protect The Most Vulnerable Family Members!

Families Come In All Shapes and Sizes!

Some families are units consistent with 1 or 2 people.

Other families have a larger unit to include several children.

Again other families have multiple generations living together to make up a family unit.

Whatever your family looks like, we are sure of two things

You

  • love them
  • want to protect them

We are here to offer some insights and help!

Protect Vulnerable Family Members First!

Below find some of the most vulnerable family members as well as ways you can protect them and keep them safe.

Protect the Elderly in your Home!

An elderly person living in your home, or living alone, often spends time home alone.

In case of emergency, we recommend a wearable personal safety button, also called a panic button.

School Children Coming Home After School to an Empty House

Is there ever a ‘right time’ to leave your child home alone?

How do you know your child is ready to come home after school to an empty house?

We hear and know your concerns.

New Baby? You Need a New Emergency Plan!

Anytime you have a new addition to the family, your family emergency plan should change!

You also need to update your home, to keep your new baby safe from harm as s/he grows and starts being mobile!

Family Security Doesn’t Have To Cost an Arm and a Leg!

Every family should have the peace of mind that comes with having a security system!

We at Strand Security work with families to find a solution that works and one they can afford.

Doesn’t everyone deserve security and safety?

Secure Your Doors as Babies Become Mobile!

As babies grow from infants to roaming toddlers, your families’ needs may change to include locks and alerts on doors, windows and pools!

Installing a home camera system is another great way to keep ‘an eye’ on roaming toddlers!

Got a New Teenaged Driver? Safety First!

Teenagers enjoy the new freedom they get once they have a driver’s license. With that freedom comes new danger and dangerous situations. Keep your teenagers safe from harm. Here are some tips.

Track Your Teenager on the Road for Safety

Did you know we can help you track your new teenager driver (or your elderly relative if need be!)? How about that peace of mind when they are out and about.

While protecting your teenager is great, you are also tracking that expensive car of yours, of course!

Teenagers Don’t Want to Talk To You!

How then, will you know they are doing their homework, chores or if they arrived home safely?

A system like Honeywell Lynx would let you know exactly that!
Security cameras and the system can send you updates in realtime as to their whereabouts and on-going activities in your home! No need to ask them what they are doing; you can just check the cameras!

Last But Not Least, Protect Your Pets!

While pets can help deter break-ins and chase off would-be-burglars, they are still vulnerable.

If no one is home and fire were to break out, these family members need rescuing too!

Side note: How fun is it, to see what your dog is up to while you are at work? Lots of fun! 😉
