It is almost 2019.
If you live in South Carolina as we do, you are still enjoying the weather and outdoor time as winter still has not really hit our area. We’ve been visited by a hurricane or two, and lots of rain has fallen, but temperatures have barely dipped below freezing and the sun is out on most days.
Kids are riding brand new bicycles, golf is being played and time is spent at the beach.
While you might be enjoying time away from home this holiday season, your home (and business) might be left unattended.
Whether someone planned to rob you, or they commit a crime of opportunity doesn’t really matter to you once this crime has happened, but there is a BIG difference between the two.
Planned robberies are hard to prevent, but a crime of opportunity is often preventable!
When you leave your home, there’s isn’t anyone to sound the alarm in case of an emergency or robbery, unless you have a monitored system in place.
We can’t stress enough how easy home and business monitoring is to set up on our end, to give you peace of mind for those times you can not be present.
There should never be a question of ‘who is protecting what is yours?’.
You can protect everything by finding the best security company to work with!
There are several different ways to find the best Myrtle Beach Security company to work with.
We encourage you to

Strand Security was the Gold Medal Award Winner 2018 in Myrtle Beach this year in the ‘Security’ category.
Let us know how we can serve you, too!
For many law enforcement agencies, crime spikes during the summer. Crime statistics indicate warmer cities, however, often don’t experience much change. It’s generally cities in colder climates and tourist destinations, like Myrtle Beach, that experience the largest monthly changes in reported crimes.
Why is that?
Summer is supposed to be the best time of the year, but it sure brings out the worst in some people. A study released by the US Dept. of Justice found a definite correlation between the season and the crime rate. Researchers found that crime rates are often lower in the fall and winter while peaking in the summer. Some of the summer crime rate increases were significant.
On the Grand Strand, we also have a spike in crime rate due to an influx of tourists visiting our area. As our population swells in the summer months, so do crime rates!
Summertime = Burglary time!
From one of our earlier articles:
2 million home break ins are reported each year in the United States!
30 percent of break ins occur through an unlocked window or door.
66 percent of all break ins are residential break-ins vs business break ins.
The highest percentage of break ins happens during the summer months.
Homes without security systems are up to 300% more likely to be broken into.
How can you protect what is yours in this type of environment?
Make a plan to keep your home and other assets safe while away.
Failing to plan is planning to fail!
Instead, follow these guidelines.
Having someone keep an eye on your property is a smart way to go on vacation and come home to an undisturbed home.
Smart burglars – and yes, there are some smart and sophisticated burglars and thieves out there – will avoid confrontation. They do not want to come to your home while you are home. They do not want to break down a door, they’d rather find one unlocked. They do not want an alarm set off. They’d much rather burglarize a home without a system.
Here are 7 ways to protect your home while you are away (for the day or) on vacation!
Wouldn’t love to be a ‘fly on the wall’ to keep an eye on your home while away?
You can be!
With our Honeywell Total Connect App, you can monitor your home (or any other asset) from afar from your phone or tablet, in real time!
Doesn’t knowing this give you peace of mind while on vacation?

The question of whether cheap security systems can protect you in an emergency is a simple one.
The answer is ‘Yes, cheap security systems CAN protect you in an emergency, however…’
As always, there’s a caveat to such a question.
The ‘however‘ is what this article will focus on. Please read on.
The problem with cheaply made products is that they are… well… cheap!
In other words, cheap security systems might not last as long and replacement costs can thus drive up your total cost.
If you are in the market for an upgrade and you want to go cheap, be forewarned that cheap systems often don’t integrate well with older systems or any system for that matter. Meaning, you might have to fork over more money because you might not be able to reuse existing hardware. Again, in the end, this will drive up the final cost.
Cheaply made does not always have to mean lesser quality.
When it does, however, and when cheap translates into broken or malfunctioning systems requiring maintenance, this, of course, comes at a cost.
As much as we like you, our customer, we really don’t want to come see you every month because of issues with a cheap security system. We much rather spend our time helping (new) customers set up new systems that will last a long, long time!
When a system breaks to no fault of yours, warranties will allow for replacement units. That is, as long as you didn’t pick the cheapest security system without such warranty. In that case, you will be responsible for replacing units and again, cheap becomes expensive when you have these unexpected additional costs associated with your security system.
We work with many different brands and we stand behind every piece of equipment we install.
Have you checked out the Honeywell Total Connect systems and mobile apps?
We believe everyone can afford a security system; let us work within your budget!
If the security system is new and has been installed by a reputable dealer, even cheap security systems will

If you have any sort of burglar system, congrats. We hope you did your research before purchasing and that you are happy with the system you picked and the provider you currently have. Have you had an emergency yet? How good was the customer service provided and how was the response time?
If you do not currently have any sort of system in your home, we assume you might want to know how to get the best burglar system money can buy!
If you own a business like us, you understand the value of preventing crime.
Having a solid burglar system in place at your business location can help prevent and deter crime. A system with cameras can also help you determine cause, and guilt, of crimes.
If you do not currently have any sort of system at your place of business, we assume you might want to know how to get the best burglar system money can buy!
Here are several points to consider before buying any kind of security burglar system.
Why do you need a burglar alarm system?
Most often, something ‘triggers’ a homeowner or business owner to start looking for the best burglar system available.
The journey to select starts with solid research on what is available in your location.
‘The best burglar alarm system your money can buy’ can mean many things.
When thinking about a budget think about the following cost; both now and in the future.
The most basic burglar system will still deter a would-be burglar.
A fancy, automated system will make it easier for you to operate the system.
If you are going to be spending money on a burglar system, this is a great time to check out your smart home options!
These systems can and do work together.
Have you ever thought about
Talk to your trusted security company about these options BEFORE deciding on a burglar system.
Last but not least, we want you to remember that you get what you pay for.
You could have the best equipment, the latest technology, and the nicest customer service rep, but if the response time of the monitoring company is not good, you could still be left ‘in a pickle’ when an emergency happens to you or your family!
We at Strand Security pride ourselves on working with the best in the industry!
If you think you need a security system, you probably have done some due diligence on crime rates in your street, neighborhood, town, and county. People come to us for security systems for some of the following reasons.
The last reason is what we hate to see happen to anyone!
People call us after they’ve had a home invasion, burglary or experienced personal violence. They are scared, worried, traumatized by the recent experience and need to feel secure and protected once again.
There’s not always a budget for a security system when crime happens, which of course always happens unexpectedly.
Today, we’d like to talk to you about cheap home security.
Is there such a thing as cheap home security, or is it an oxymoron?
Well… the answer is yes.
Let’s get this straight.
“You get what you pay for.”
Having said that, here are some ideas for cheap home security (and the limitations each option brings).
Adding any of these options to your home will give you a bit more security and most likely a bit more peace of mind. These are not perfect solutions by any stretch, but if you are limited on funds, these options are a good place to start.
Yes and yes!

#1 Work with a local, locally owned security company. We can not stress the importance of this enough!
#2 Check the company out online. Read reviews, check their website and social media channels.
#3 Ask about technician experience. Anyone who is proud of their work will tell you how long they’ve been in the business and why!
#4 Call your local chamber or the BBB for recommendations. Any legitimate business will be registered and most likely be active in the community.
#5 Ask for current specials and promotions. Some companies run online promotions you might not know about when you call. They most likely will be happy to give you that promotion. All you have to do is ask.
We are here for the Myrtle Beach, Horry County, and Georgetown County communities.

There are so many bells, whistles, brands, companies, options to choose from!
Help is on the way!
We have identified five important markers for you to check to find the best home security system for your home and family.
That is exactly what you need to start with:
identify your personal needs, goals and wants in a home security system in order to find the best home security system available to you
Here are the five questions you need to ask yourself!
Grab a piece of paper and start writing down answers, then give us a call!
What type of system you need, and want, depends on your home; the size, layout, and location.
Here are some factors to consider.
Next, let’s talk money!
As we can’t look in your pocketbook, or checkbook for that matter. Therefore, you should find a price point you are happy with before contacting a security company. It will help them, and you, decide on what you can afford at this time. If your financial situation changes, you can add additional features and services! If you have to go ‘bare-bones’ to start with, go for it, but make sure to make that a clear objective when searching for the best home security system.
Next, let’s talk functionality!
Not everyone likes bells and whistles. Not everyone needs or wants all the latest technology or the highest ranked equipment. It is important, however, that your system performs the tasks you need it to perform!
Answer these questions.
Once you have an idea about functionality, it’s time to talk integration.
If you bought a new home with security system equipment installed, your (new) provider needs to know what system and what equipment is currently in your home. Sometimes this equipment can be reused or repurposed; this will depend on what brands your provider works with and the age of the system and equipment. If you already own home automation hardware and software and you want to integrate a new security system with it, your security provider needs to know this as well. It is important to make a list of all technology in your home.
There is a difference between what your intended usage is and what your family’s needs are. Talking to your security provider is a great place to start. Tell them who lives in your home, who might need access to your system, whether you travel, if you also own a business which needs security and more.
Answering these questions after having answered the four previous questions will help your provider give you options for the best home security system for your current home.
We welcome any and all inquiries about security systems. We are here to help protect those you love.

If you have an older child, or two, or three, you’ve most likely already adjusted some of your security and safety protocols each time you added a new bundle of joy to your family. If this is your first baby, we want to make sure that you are informed to make the best decisions regarding safety and security for your family.
Here are a few tips we’ve gathered from the experts i.e other parents and security professionals.
Keeping baby safe inside the home is great, but what about dangers coming in from outside?
A home invasion is a very traumatic experience, whether you have a new baby, or not.
There is never a guarantee that a break-in or home evasion won’t happen to you and yours, yet there are many ways to deter a criminal. Then if you have a monitored security alarm system, you have the added knowledge that when help is ever needed, help is on the way with the push of one button, or with one tripped wire, or with one smoke alarm going off.
We welcome your thoughts, questions and feedback!
Many construction sites deal with the same two crimes:
✓ Theft (of tools, equipment and materials)
The Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach area is undergoing a huge surge in new construction of homes and businesses and thus there are many new construction sites popping up. Each site deals with theft and vandalism, and we do get calls and inquiries about how to prevent crime from happening.
As much as the advice is
‘Don’t leave anything of value at your construction site unattended’
that advice, in reality, isn’t very practical.
What is realistic, is that sometimes you need to leave materials, equipment and large tools at the site. The good news?
There are ways to protect these items.
Here are some ideas on how to get started.
As always, preventing crime is a much better option that reporting crime and having to replace tools, equipment or materials. The time it takes to set up and secure your site is nothing compared to the time it would take to replace stolen tools, equipment or materials or have to fix an act of vandalism.
We highly encourage you to talk to your security specialist before it is too late!
When you are out and about and you see cameras at the following commercial locations
do you feel an immediate sense of safety and security?
Sure you do!
Most of these establishments have REAL cameras and are recording your activities, some are even monitoring your activities in real-time.
Would it make a difference to you and how you’d feel if you knew any number of these cameras were fake? Would you be able to detect if any of these cameras were fake? Would you avoid those commercial locations if you knew there were no real cameras recording your every move?
In retail stores, gas stations , car dealerships, restaurants and gyms, often cameras are used to prevent theft, as well as to protect their employees.
In schools and banks, often these cameras are used to keep employees and customers safe from harm first and foremost, and of course also help deter crime such as theft.
At home, home owners who have cameras report feeling a higher level of security then those without, especially if the cameras are connected to the monitoring system and the camera feed is accessible from a remote location.
If a burglar detects cameras while casing a home, s/he most likely will stake out a different home.
However, if this crime is to be a crime of opportunity (as in; they see you leave, or they know you are on vacation, or at work), most often the criminal does not care whether you have any cameras, as it will be a quick come and go.
With cameras installed and visible, you are deterring potential burglars, but not deterring professional criminals.
So what about just adding fake security cameras strategically places on the outside of your home?
Will fake security cameras prevent crime?
The answer is YES and BUT.
YES, fake security cameras will prevent some crime BUT there are a few important things fake security cameras can not do for you!
So fake cameras are just that, fake. A professional burglar can and will detect the cameras and identify them as fake quickly. Even those with the blinking red lights and those that move – or should we say, especially those with blinking red lights and those that move, randomly?
Once these fake cameras have been identified as fake, a burglar will continue their plan to break in with more confidence.
If a crime does take place, real security cameras can provide the police with a solid description of the criminals by the recordings. For obvious reasons, fake cameras will have no such footage and thus will yield no description of any criminal.
Real security cameras connected to your monitored alarm system can provide real-time updates on an on-going crime and then alert those who are monitoring your system to call for help an back up, in real time and with detail! Using your security camera feeds, the company can spot the number of assailants in the home as well as the weapons they carry and where they are located in the home. This information can be relayed to the police to aid in apprehending the suspects and keep you and your family alive.
To sum it all up, fake security cameras give a false, or fake, sense of security.
Fake security cameras do not prevent crime.
Fake security cameras might deter a fraction of potential crimes, but will be of no use in a dangerous situation.

You might know an elderly person with a personal panic button.
Don’t we all remember the first commercial (1987) with that famous line:
“I have fallen and I can’t get up”
Personal panic buttons are wonderful and enable our seniors and disabled citizen to live a more independent life then they would without.
However, panic buttons are not just for personal use (or for banks). Regular businesses could and should consider installing panic buttons in their place of business. Not convinced? Let us show you the ways…
A Panic Button is Cost Effective for your Business
What does this mean? Many businesses spent lots of money on safety and security of their goods, but not on the safety and security of their employees. However, if an employee gets hurt on the job, or worse, cost skyrockets. Getting a quick response time during emergencies can help save a life. A panic button at your place of business can summon help quickly when 9-1-1 can not be called from a phone.
A Panic Button Protects If the Threat Comes from Within
Businesses put up barriers like gates, buzz-in systems and steel doors to prevent criminals from entering their building. Businesses add security cameras and security systems to further deter criminals from stealing, loitering and attacking. However, what happens if the threat comes from within the business? From someone who is already inside the business, maybe a coworker or trusted delivery person? While current events show us that no one is safe from harm, no matter where you live and where you go in public (a concert, a bank, a school or a movie theater), a panic button can help those who are in a dire situation quickly!
A Panic Button Promotes Workplace Safety
When your company deals with the public, and customers come into your place of business for a service or a product, and you have a slew of ‘random strangers’ coming through your door like it is a revolving door, it is imperative that you protect your employees as well as your customers from potential danger. A panic button near the cash register, or strategically placed around the workplace, or even on your manager or person-in-charge will allow a call for help within seconds of an emergency. Often it is seconds, not minutes that can make the difference between life and death. Employees who feel save at work perform better.
Do you own a business on the Grand Strand, in the Myrtle Beach area? We would love to come talk to you about installing panic buttons in your place of business. From our own personal experience, we know how important this back up is.
