Crime Happens: How To Deter a Criminal From Targeting You

Crime Happens: How To Deter a Criminal From Targeting You

Crime Happens in Myrtle Beach!

If you live in South Carolina or the Myrtle Beach area, it should come as no surprise to learn that crime happens in our area. We are a transient community with millions of tourists who flock to our shores, and golf courses. That tourist activity invites criminal activity.

Crime happens.

In this article we will give a few tips on how to deter a criminal from target you!

Take Safety and Security Precautions

If a burglar really wants to clean you out and rob you, s/he will and not much will stop them. However, more often than not, criminals will ‘case’ a house and if they see security precautions in place, they will skip you as a target and move on to the next house!

Ways to deter a criminal from targeting your home:

Ways to deter a criminal from targeting your car:

  • install a car alarm
  • lock the doors
  • park it inside your garage
  • or park it on your driveway and install motion-detecting lights.

Next, let’s talk about personal safety!

To Deter Being a Target to Criminals: Look and Act Confident

Always, always, always be aware of your surroundings. Whether you are in a parking lot, busy mall, or going for a run: know who is near you and know where you are going! Looking and acting confident is a good way to deter a criminal from choosing you as their next target.

We further recommend self-defense classes for anyone and all.

The first lesson in self-defense is awareness of your surroundings. Keep your head up, no headphones or talking on your phone while walking in busy places, and know where you are going.

Stopping a robbery or preventing one starts with awareness!

Partner Up with Neighbors and Friends

Last but not least, criminals want an easy target and prefer a lonely target.

When running, or shopping, try to team up with a neighbor or friend.

At the same time, starting a neighborhood watch program is a great way to look out for one another. Sharing information with neighbors about potential criminal activity, and letting your neighbors know when you are away can also prevent crime. Partnering up is a smart way to keep yourself safe and secure.

When Crime Does Happen

If you have an alarm system, and it’s monitored, even if a crime does happen, you have the peace of mind that help is on the way! We highly recommend a monitored system which will alert authorities, in the event you are incapacitated. This can save lives as second, minutes count when crime happens!

If you have concerns about your security or personal safety, comes talk to us. We can customize a system that works for your home, your family or your business!

We are only a phone call away.

How to Connect With the Right Home Security Company

home security company near me Myrtle beach

Are You Looking for a Home Security Company?

When moving to a new town or state or when you purchase a new home, it might be time to find a home security company to help you navigate the security and safety concerns of your new home.

How do you go about vetting the many choices of home security companies to find the one that is right for you?

This article will give you a few tips to get you moving in the right direction. Ultimately, it’s up to you to find and connect with the best fit and the best company to protect your home and family!

Connecting with the Right Home Security Company

When it’s time to choose a home security company to install and maintain your security system, understand you should always focus more attention on customers service and brand quality, than on price.

Ultimately, just about anyone with a screwdriver can hang a security camera – but it’s the knowledge and years of experience that will tell a professional where to hang that camera and to what system to connect it, as well as diagnose system failures or service interruptions.

Connecting with the right security company means connecting with a company that is interested and invested in your community and will serve your community for years to come.

Here is how we would start a search to connect with the right home security company.

1 Research ‘Local Home Security Company’ Online

Before leaving your home, and don’t we all want to avoid that these days, start your research online. Google ‘local home security company’ and add your location if needed.

Look for websites, Google reviews, social media presence, online reviews and images.

Create a list of several local home security companies.

2 Ask For Referrals from Friends and Neighbors

Next, ask your friends and neighbors for referrals. Don’t just ask ‘Who do you use?’ but ask them questions about WHY they picked that local business and what they love about working with them. Ask them what services they’ve contracted for and how responsive that company is when an emergency arises!

3 Keep an Eye Out for Service Vehicles and Signs in your Area

Last but not least, keep an eye out for service vehicles in your neighborhood. When you take your dog for a walk, try to find signs. When you take a bike ride with your family, look for those service vehicles. take note of which ones are helping your neighbors with their home security needs!

4 Pick Up The Phone and Call

Now that you have developed a list of potential local home security companies you want to give your business to, pick up the phone and call! There is no substitute for a phone call inquiring about services!

You will know pretty quickly if you are getting what is ‘advertised’ so to speak!

Does a human answer the phone? If you got the answering service or a machine, how quickly, if at all, was your call returned? Did you get answers to your questions and a friendly human on the line? Move this company to the top of your list!

5 Prioritize Your Needs and Wishes

Once you have a top 3 of local home security companies you potentially want to work with, make a list of services you need now, and additional services they offer that you are interested in for a future project.

That could includes additional services like

Choose Locally Owned and Locally Operated!

One more point to drive home. We highly recommend asking each potential business if they are locally owned and locally operated. Supporting your local businesses in 2021 is more important than ever.

If you are in the Myrtle Beach area, in Horry County or in Georgetown County, we invite your to give us a call!

10 Reasons To Love Monitored Security Systems

Monitored Security Systems.

A home security system can stand between a homeowner and a happy outcome when disaster strikes. On the South Carolina coastline in the Grand Strand area, a disaster might mean the occurrence of a hurricane, or a flood.

In other parts of the country, disaster might include tornadoes or earthquakes.

For everyone, no matter whether you live in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach or elsewhere, a fire or medical emergency can quickly turn into a disaster if help is not immediately dispatched.

Today, let’s celebrate 10 reasons to love monitored security systems.

1 Get Immediate Help When Intruders Enter Your Home

First and foremost, when an intruder, thief, or burglar invades your home they have nothing but bad things in mind. If you are home when this happens, you are now in physical danger.

With a monitored security system, help is dispatched whether you are able to communicate with emergency services, or if you are incapacitated!

2 Access To Medical Assistance When Needed

The same is true when someone in your home has a medical emergency. With just the push of a button you can summon help! Seconds can make the difference between a good outcome and a disastrous one especially when the emergency is a matter of life or death like during a heart attack, a near drowning or a lightning strike.

3 In Case of Fire

Do you sleep soundly at night? What happens when your fire alarm goes off? Do you call the fire station, rescue your family, rescue your pets, rescue your belongings? What if you ONLY had to think about rescuing your family and pets, knowing that the fire department is already on their way? That is what happens when you have a monitored system! The fire department is dispatched while you are getting out of the house!

Time is of the essence during a fire emergency.  A monitored system will give you that little bit of extra time!

4 Alert To Possible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning is deadly – and silent. Installing carbon monoxide detectors is step one to home safety, having these alarms hardwired to your monitored alarm so when you are incapacitated due to carbon monoxide poisoning, is even better!

5 Protect Your Assets

With a monitored system, the burden of always looking over your shoulder for danger is not on you. Having a second set of eyes on your home, your car, your pool area, your business is the best way to protect assets you care about.

6 Remote Access to Your Home Security Cameras

With monitored alarm systems like Honeywell Total Connect or Alarm.com you also have remote access to your home security cameras, allowing your to monitor what is going on in real time.

7 Immediate access to you Teenager, Babysitter, Pet or Elderly Parent

With a monitored security system even if you can’t reach someone at home during an emergency, the monitoring company will do their best to reach someone or send help immediately!

8 Save on Homeowners Insurance

Did you know that most insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who have a monitored system because they know that a monitored home is a safer home?

9 Peace of Mind When Home

A monitored security system gives you peace of mind when you are home – alone or with your family. You can go about your day and know that if someone enters your home unexpectedly, or is a fire starts, that help is on the way! this is especially true for night time!

10 Peace of Mind When Traveling

At the same time, peace of mind comes when traveling if you have a monitored security system. The monitoring company will replay any issues to you in real time, no matter where you are, as long as you can be reached by phone! How awesome is that?

3 Security Areas to Focus on Amid The COVID-19 Pandemic

Six months after the start of the 2020 pandemic millions of people in the USA still work from home.

As South Carolinians are getting ready to send their kids back to school, many parents are opting to keep them home. If you are homeschooling one or more children in Fall 2020, this might be of interest to you.

Homeschooling in a smarthome is just plan smart!

Commercial Security System Updates For the Pandemic!

With COVID-19 forcing many employees to work from home, business executives are having to rethink their online and offline security needs.

Security procedures that were in place before the pandemic might no longer be valid as employees work from home, and new strategies are having to be implemented.

This article looks at three vulnerable areas of security as a starting point for those who manage companies in the time of this coronavirus pandemic.

1. Remote Security Monitoring Capabilities

While stores might or might not be open, offices are shut or only open for limited hours and with limited employees, for those in charge of employee safety, inventory and customer satisfaction it is imperative to be able to monitor on-going activities on location, from home.

Does you current commercial security system have these capabilities? Can you monitor your cameras from your phone? Can you watch your employees, keep an eye on your customers or your backroom inventory? Are you monitoring the commercial alarm system from any device?

You should be able to do this at anytime, but with so many people working from home, this has become an essential piece of data and communication between employers and employees .

If you are not currently monitoring cameras and activity in real-time, it’s time for an upgrade.

2. Renewed and Updated Cybersecurity Protocol

With millions of employees quickly transitioning to working from home, it’s easy for businesses to have forgotten to update their cybersecurity protocol.

If that was you, now is the time to get it done!

Working from home brings security concerns that are unique to those seen in a traditional office setting. While working from home, employees may be accessing or transmitting trade secrets, personal information of individuals, and other confidential information. Exposure of trade secrets or confidential business information can cause expensive damages or loss to a company” Source CPO Magazine.

Things to be aware of and fix ASAP:

  • Coronavirus scams
  • Not-secure Wifi connections

Things to implement include:

  • Cybersecurity software
  • Secure access to company server
  • Off-network communications
  • Ensure Secure passwords are in place, including two-factor verification for Google accounts and social media channels.
  • Shutdown of all devices when not in use.

Check out our Best Work From Home Cybersecurity Tips

3. Employee Information and Privacy Protection

While your employees are at home, often using work computers to get work done, it’s important to update your employee information, to protect their privacy as well as yours!

This includes things like choosing the right video platforms .
While Zoom has had security issues, Webex is secure enough for the large TV networks and financial institutions to use.

Sharing sensitive information through online portals also requires special software – just make sure sure that you, the employer are aware of and are in charge of the tools used by everyone who works for you from home!

By updating your online and offline security strategies you are providing a safe and secure working environment for everyone; those who will continue to work form home into 2021 and those who might want to migrate back into the office.

10 Reasons To Love Quality Speakers

This is the 7th article in a series of 12 articles. 2020 is the year we at Strand Security celebrate our 10th anniversary by giving you 10 reasons to love the things we love as well:

In previous articles in 2020, we gave you 10 reason to love….our community, the Grand Strand, Smarthomes, Home Theater, Living in South Carolina, security cameras and now we will give you 10 reasons to love quality speakers!

What Makes a Great Speaker?

There are, of course, some recognizable brands of speakers.

Sonos is a big one and we’ve blogged about Sonos before as that’s a brand we’ve loved for a long while!

Another ‘famous’ or better worded ‘recognizable’ brand is Klipsch! And yes, we carry and install that brand of speakers as well.

What really makes a great speaker though?
Let’s count the (10) ways we love quality speakers!

10 Reasons To Love Quality Speakers

1 Speakers Amplify Audio

We love quality speakers because they bring sound to your home or business as authentic as possible.

Advanced technology and engineering techniques allow us to hear and pick up incredible low, high, soft and loud sounds through speakers. Gone are the days of low-quality squeaky speakers, and gone are those that sounded hollow, or worse, scratchy! Long live clear audio.

2 Speakers Can Make or Break the Room. We Love the Aesthetics

Speakers can be beautiful. There, we said it! Gone are the days of over-sized larger-than-life square boxes hanging on your wall. Today’s speakers are streamlined, compact, and aesthetics play a much more important role in overall customer satisfactory than years ago.

Customers are asking and buying aesthetically pleasing products to fit into their home decor.

3 Speakers Can Reach all Corners of Your Home, Business or Property!

The reach of wireless speakers is phenomenal. No matter where your system is located in your home or business, through wireless connections, speakers can be part of a large system and reach even the furtherest corners of your home, building and property.

4 Speaker Functionality Makes Us Love Them!

Functionality is key!

Speakers like Alexa connected to a home security system allow us to use voice-commands to create our very own smarthome! Not only are voice-activated systems convenient, in the days of Covid-19 this is also high desirable as there are now no germs to worry about or lingering on touch pads!

5 Integration With Other Systems Make Speakers Versatile

Speakers can be integrated with existing systems in your home. Home theater systems, security systems, smarthome systems – the possibilities are endless. To upgrade your systems, or make changes, changing out existing speaker can make a world of difference.

6 Speakers Will Play Your Music

Only by the time we got to #6 am we giving you ‘music‘ as a reason to love speakers! That’s pretty funny. Of course, music plays a huge role in speaker selection. However, by moving it to the middle of this article, we are demonstrating the many ways speakers can be utilized in your home.

7 Speakers Will Bring Your Movies To Life!

Theaters are well-loved not only for showing the movies on ‘the big screen’ but movie buffs love hearing the sounds and audio of the movies in that same larger-room setting. Getting the right speakers and installing them in your home theater, you can recreate that same sound and feeling, that same experience you’d have when watching a move in a real theater.

8 Speakers Will Bring Back Memories as Your Play Home Movies!

Have you ever played back home movies? Listening to grandpa’s voice when he was young, hearing the teenager speak as a child, listening to grandma read a book – she who’s just passed away. Speakers can bring back the sounds of memories. How powerful is that?

9 Speakers Will Broadcast Your Favorite Podcasts, Audiobooks and the News!

If you love to listen to stories, audiobooks, podcasts and yes, the news, having the right type of speaker will help you enjoy these daily habits even more! When selecting speakers, be sure to note the reason and use of your speakers to your trusted dealer so they can help you select the right speakers for the right type of use.

10 Speakers Will Bring Favorite TV Show Characters Into Your Home!

Last but not least, when watching TV shows on the big screen – your home theater screen, or your large smart TV – sound is most important to make that experience a memorable one. Bring characters to life by having the best speakers to broadcast your favorite shows.

Speaker Brands We Love, Install and Use Ourselves

We are a locally owned and operated small business. We have three children and we love home movies, music, TV shows and more. We also have an integrated security system and understand the value of good speakers. Come talk to us and we will share our experience with you! Our showroom in Murrells Inlet is open we will be more than happy to have you listen to some of your favorite tunes on our favorite speakers!

How To Attain a Germ-Free Smarthome in the Post COVID-19 World

germ-free smarthome

Smarthomes Can Be Touch-Free Homes

Kids touch everything.

It’s just how they are.

They touch their face, their mouth, their eyes, pets, food, and any surface they come in contact with at home, at school and on-the-go!

In the age of COVID-19 and the coronavirus pandemic, touching means possibly coming in contact with COVID-19 germs. While social distancing measures certainly have helped the spread of this virus, it’s hard to know exactly when and where you are most exposed to germs.

There is one place you are safe. Once you’ve quarantined your family for at least two weeks, you can be assured the coronavirus is not in your home.

As the country is looking for ways to reopen and restart our economy, we are all looking for ways to touch less surfaces and stay germ-free as much as possible

Voice Activation Means Germ-Free Automation!

Smarthomes with voice activation is your solution to keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Not having to touch multiple surfaces will eliminate close contact with those who might visit your home as the country is opening back  up again.

Whether you install voice-activation at home or in your business, it is the best tool in your arsenal against spreading germs.

URC Smarthome Technology: Touch-Free and Germ-Free Technology

URC can

  •  alarm your home

The Best Home Security Tips for Homebound Seniors

homebound seniors security tips

While we as Americans and world citizens are currently (mostly) homebound ourselves due to government restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 Pandemic, many of our seniors have been homebound for a lot longer.

Do you have an elderly family member who lives alone?

Have you given their continued safety enough consideration?

In this article, we will give you the best home security tips for homebound seniors! Please share with those you love.

Who is Considered a Homebound Senior?

The definition of a homebound senior:

being homebound or housebound means an individual is unable to leave their home without difficulty, and due to this difficulty, generally does not leave their home. It is usually due to advanced age, illness, or a disability.

Often, seniors deal not only with their advanced age, but they also have illnesses or disabilities that would prevent them from leaving their homes.

How To Keep a Homebound Senior Safe

The best way to keep a homebound senior safe is to create a safety care plan with all parties involved.

Who needs to be included in this security and safety plan?

  • the senior(s)
  • adult children
  • primary physician
  • home healthcare workers
  • home care workers

While this plan most often focusses on physical health; making sure meds are taken, doctor appointments are kept and food is delivered, cooked and eaten, there has to be ONE central command center, so to speak.

Once a plan has been formulated, it’s time to put it into action.

Tracking Progress and Safety

While the senior in your life might or might not have access and the ability to use technology, the care team certainly does.

We found several great apps to check out to coordinate efforts to keep the senior healthy and safe.

We liked these two:

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Buddy

The Alzheimer’s Association, a leader in action and awareness around the disease, developed this “caregiver buddy” app to help caregivers manage their personal stress, navigate family conflict and reach a 24/7 helpline.

The app includes features like daily care tips for tasks related to hygiene and meal times, and fun activities that will stimulate the body and mind of someone living with dementia. It also covers how to cope with new and sometimes overwhelming behaviors, like aggression or hallucination.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Buddy is available for free on iPhone or Android.

Caring Bridge

Communication is critical when dividing caregiving duties among multiple people — and that’s where CaringBridge can help. CaringBridge connects several caregivers through one app, allowing several people to keep track of appointments, changes in health and other essential information.

Users can also send each other inspiring messages and motivation through the app, which really helps pull together a team of caregivers in the toughest moments.

CaringBridge is available for free on iPhone or Android.

Home Security Tips for Seniors

If the senior in your life lives at home, here are the best home security tips we’ve found to protect your senior. If the senior lives with you and your family, we recommend you read this.

Immediate Access to Emergency

This is the number one concern so set up your senior with a panic button so that help is on the way quickly. It could save their life!

Fire Safety

If the senior in your life is still doing some home cooking, it might be time to install some additional safety measures.

Start with this checklist of prevention tips, and move onto these types of devices, if needed!

Then invest in an automatic stove turn-off device before the first fire even starts.

Security Cameras and Smart Technology

If you can’t be with them all the time, the closest, or second-best option is to install security cameras in your senior’s home. Both Alarm.com and Honeywell Total Connect offer apps with smarthome technology to keep an eye on your senior. While this is something the senior has to agree to, it might give all of the family peace of mind!

Install and Teach Your Senior To Use The Peephole

This goes without saying, and seniors might need to hear this more than once; not everyone who comes to their door is up to good. Remind your senior to not open the door to strangers.

Keep Windows and Doors Locked When at Home!

While fresh air is great, open doors and windows could potentially invite unwanted visitors. We don’t recommend scaring your senior, but common sense should prevail. When living alone, they need to be aware of doors and windows and not leave them opened and unattended for long periods of time!

Alert the Senior of Phone Scams Targeting Seniors

Keep this dialogue going! Local police will often warn of local scams, and putting a note near your senior’s phone might be a good start! The note should remind them to NEVER give out their Social Security number, a credit card number, or send money. When in doubt, they need to know it’s OK to disconnect the call!
