Just for a minute, consider the consequences of a home security install disaster.
Go ahead!Consider them.
Your family’s safety and security should be your number one priority. There are certain things you can cut corners on, and yes, saving money feels good! Let us be the first to tell you, cheap is not always the best value!
Do it yourself home security almost always
….starts with over-confidence.
Quickly turns into a frustrating project.
…and can be an utter and total fiasco and failure!
As we don’t want that to happen to you and yours, here are some Do It Yourself Home Security Fails you can learn from!
You are welcome!
The experts have seen hundreds, maybe thousands of homes and businesses and have installed countless security systems. An expert understands what each location needs and what is unique about that home or business. They check and measure the distance to exits, current lighting, ask about habits, potential users of the system and many more questions. When an expert comes to you for a consult, they take everything into consideration before deciding what equipment you need. You, on the other hand, might be lured by price points, sales at the local hardware store or by what your 80-year-old neighbor installed in his much larger, or smaller, home.
Security is not one-size-fits-all.
Therefore, ask a security expert to help you pick the exact equipment you need to secure your home and keep your family safe!
Another mistake frequently people make is that they underestimate the time and knowledge it takes to install a new system correctly. Even if you’ve wired lights before, installing a security system is different.
It is only your family’s safety and security that depends on you installing a new system correctly.
Ask yourself: “Am I 100% sure I know what I am doing?”
If you can not answer that question affirmatively, it’s time to outsource this skill to an expert!
There are tons of commercials enticing you to buy add-ons to your current system. There are even more YouTube videos available to watch and learn from. DIY videos are one of the most watched genres of videos on YouTube.
Old and New Equipment Don’t Often Integrate Well. Ask an Expert to Make Sure It Can Be Done Safely and Securely.
Just because you watched a video, that does not make you an expert.
Just because your friend is helping you install some new features, does not make you both security system installers.
Just because you think you can, does not mean you can!
If you tired and failed to be the do-it-yourself home security installer, it is time to call in the expert.
Often, experts only work with the best systems and the best brands, something many DIY installers don’t consider. That might make your ‘deal’ on the hardware from the local hardware store, not such a good deal afterall because if you can’t use the equipment and you can’t return it, you will end up paying double, never mind the wasted time you’ll never get back!
We hope your home is safe and secure!
Let us know if disaster struck and you need us, we are only one phone call away!
Are you looking to add a home theater to your home this year?
Are you exploring your options for a home theater and you aren’t’ sure where to start?
You’ve come to the right place.
We are Strand Security and we not only specialize in residential and commercial security systems, we also design and install home theaters all along the Grand Strand, both in Horry County and Georgetown County.
If you are considering whether you can DIY or whether you need expert advice for your home theater setup, this is also the place to find out.
The fact that you are considering adding a home theater, or upgrading an existing home theater, means that you most likely have experienced the fun and incredible experience of home entertainment.
Before you decide on what you want, you need to know what options are available to you!
The best place to start is with research!
There are many great places to start your research. Here are some options:
What is your prefered order of ‘wants’ in a home theater?
Put these in order of most importance to you first, and then get started with planning.
You might want, want, want, but what can your home handle? How big is the space you are planning to add this home theater?
It is very important to take good measurements and to draw up a plan. Creating a design blueprint is a great idea. There are apps you can download that will help you do this on your phone so that you can visualize where what your room will look like and where the seating and equipment will be placed.
The most important thing to consider in all this home theater planning is this:
If you have never setup a home theater, a Smart TV, lighting, surround sound, a computer system or anything of this sort, setting up a home theater is going to do nothing for you but give you a big headache.
We suggested hiring an expert for your home theater setup and design.
It’s what they do all day long and what they are good at! This home theater installer will be aware of the latest technology, where to get the best pricing on the best equipment and how to install and program the whole system so it works the first time you want to use it!
Give Strand Security a call today to discuss your home theater questions!
Of course, you do! Who wouldn’t want to check out the best home security deals in town?
We at Strand Security understand that, like us, you work hard for your money and you need to stretch that income as far as you can. You need a deal! The best deal! You need to find the best home security deals your hard-earned money can buy.
Where do you start?
We’ve compiled a list of places for you to look for the best home security deals – check it out!
Ask your direct neighbors which security company they use, for sure, but next time you talk a walk with Fido, go for a run, or drive your car home from the grocery store, pay attention to the little signs in your neighbor’s yards!
Are you on Facebook? Do some crowdsourcing and ask your local friends via Facebook to recommend a local security company.
Do you have friends who live in a different neighborhood? Ask them who they use.
If any of your friends own a business, ask them what local security company they use.
Google is your friend! Do a simple Google search for ‘best home security deals’ or ‘home security company’ or something similar. Compile a list of companies who serve your location. Be aware that those who run Google ads will be listed first. Just because they pay to market doesn’t make them the best fit for your needs. Check beyond the first few and compile a list of at least five choices. Next, check to see if any of these companies have (positive) Google reviews.
Once you have a list of local security companies, we suggest checking out their web presence. Look for an ‘about’ page, location map, brands they use, a blog (like this one) and pictures and/or videos. If you can’t find a website, skip them.
While on the website, click through to their social media channels. Look for a Facebook Page to start and see if they have any (positive) Facebook reviews. Check to see if it is active, what is posted and when they last posted and maybe send a message to the page to check response time. Online customer service should be expected, not be the exception.
Once you have your list, cross-reference your list with the local chamber. Locally owned companies are most likely active in the community and active with the local chamber. This should not be a dealbreaker by any means. However, we think you should give those who are members an extra gold star. 😉
Now that you are pretty certain you have a solid list of local security companies, call each and everyone to find the best home security deal.
Pay attention to the following when placing a call.
“If someone doesn’t treat each and every potential customer with respect, that same person will not treat a customer with respect either.”
If you think you need a security system, you probably have done some due diligence on crime rates in your street, neighborhood, town, and county. People come to us for security systems for some of the following reasons.
The last reason is what we hate to see happen to anyone!
People call us after they’ve had a home invasion, burglary or experienced personal violence. They are scared, worried, traumatized by the recent experience and need to feel secure and protected once again.
There’s not always a budget for a security system when crime happens, which of course always happens unexpectedly.
Today, we’d like to talk to you about cheap home security.
Is there such a thing as cheap home security, or is it an oxymoron?
Well… the answer is yes.
Let’s get this straight.
“You get what you pay for.”
Having said that, here are some ideas for cheap home security (and the limitations each option brings).
Adding any of these options to your home will give you a bit more security and most likely a bit more peace of mind. These are not perfect solutions by any stretch, but if you are limited on funds, these options are a good place to start.
Yes and yes!
Home security systems come in all shapes, sizes, and brands. They run the gamut in equipment fees, monitoring fees, and smart-home intergration.
We can install a very basic home security system that you can afford. We offer great monitoring rates with the best monitoring service. We trust not just our customers with COPS monitoring, but our own family as well!
The best way to decide on a security system is to read this article; ‘What is the best home security system?’
This article features 5 questions you, as a homeowner, should answer before picking up the phone and calling us.
Once you have an idea of what you want, what you can afford and what you need, we are ready to talk shop with you!
Even on a limited budget, you should be able to get a solid security system to fit your needs.
We recommend budgeting for a monthly monitoring fee to get a complete package and the best service and security.
Interested to know why we work with COPS monitoring?
Check out these two articles.
#1 Work with a local, locally owned security company. We can not stress the importance of this enough!
#2 Check the company out online. Read reviews, check their website and social media channels.
#3 Ask about technician experience. Anyone who is proud of their work will tell you how long they’ve been in the business and why!
#4 Call your local chamber or the BBB for recommendations. Any legitimate business will be registered and most likely be active in the community.
#5 Ask for current specials and promotions. Some companies run online promotions you might not know about when you call. They most likely will be happy to give you that promotion. All you have to do is ask.
We are here for the Myrtle Beach, Horry County, and Georgetown County communities.

January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness month! We want YOU to be safe and secure at all times and this month we teamed up with another local business, Karate World, to bring FREE self-defense to our community.
This past weekend we brought together a great group of local people, including five children who together learned how to kick, squeeze, pinch, punch, push and chop themselves out of potential danger!
One of the main things we teach during these introductory self-defense classes is to try to PREVENT an assault before it happens.
As Master Jason quoted in class
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
This certainly applies to self-defense.
Heather, owner at Strand Security knows first-hand the importance of self-defense training. She credits self-defense training with saving her life when she was confronted by a criminal at gunpoint several years back. You can read her story of survival here.
It took her several years to overcome the trauma of that event. She’s now determined to bring self-defense to any and all who want it, need it or might like to know it!
The local community, as well as the local news, is taking notice of her mission!
⭐️ Heather was interviewed by WMBF News nearly two years ago when she started Myrtle Beach Self Defense.
⭐️ WBTW News 13 came out this past weekend to do a story on the FREE class.
Since January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness month, Myrtle Beach Self Defense, a division of Strand Security, is teaching self-defense classes to anyone who is interested.
Last week, MBSD hosted a special class at Coastal Carolina University with about 25 sorority sisters in attendance.
We are mobile and would love to bring our self-defense class to you. Get in contact with Heather today!

Are you a new homeowner? Have you recently moved to the Myrtle Beach area? Are you unhappy with your current home security system? If you fall in any of these three categories you might be looking for the best home security system available to you!
We want you to know we’ve got you covered!
Strand Security is a locally owned and locally operated security company. We provide both residential security systems as well as commercial security systems. If you need to protect those you love, we can help you get started with the best home security system your money can buy!
If you were to talk to 20 experts, you might find 20 different opinions about what the best home security system might be. That doesn’t make it any easier to decide, does it? I bet you’ve called around, looked on the internet, maybe you’ve asked your friends yet you still aren’t’ sure what defines ‘the best home security system’. There are so many bells, whistles, brands, companies, options to choose from!
Help is on the way!
We have identified five important markers for you to check to find the best home security system for your home and family.
That is exactly what you need to start with:
identify your personal needs, goals and wants in a home security system in order to find the best home security system available to you
Here are the five questions you need to ask yourself!
Grab a piece of paper and start writing down answers, then give us a call!
What type of system you need, and want, depends on your home; the size, layout, and location.
Here are some factors to consider.
Next, let’s talk money!
As we can’t look in your pocketbook, or checkbook for that matter. Therefore, you should find a price point you are happy with before contacting a security company. It will help them, and you, decide on what you can afford at this time. If your financial situation changes, you can add additional features and services! If you have to go ‘bare-bones’ to start with, go for it, but make sure to make that a clear objective when searching for the best home security system.
Next, let’s talk functionality!
Not everyone likes bells and whistles. Not everyone needs or wants all the latest technology or the highest ranked equipment. It is important, however, that your system performs the tasks you need it to perform!
Answer these questions.
Once you have an idea about functionality, it’s time to talk integration.
If you bought a new home with security system equipment installed, your (new) provider needs to know what system and what equipment is currently in your home. Sometimes this equipment can be reused or repurposed; this will depend on what brands your provider works with and the age of the system and equipment. If you already own home automation hardware and software and you want to integrate a new security system with it, your security provider needs to know this as well. It is important to make a list of all technology in your home.
There is a difference between what your intended usage is and what your family’s needs are. Talking to your security provider is a great place to start. Tell them who lives in your home, who might need access to your system, whether you travel, if you also own a business which needs security and more.
Answering these questions after having answered the four previous questions will help your provider give you options for the best home security system for your current home.
We welcome any and all inquiries about security systems. We are here to help protect those you love.

Many children, teenagers, college students and yes, adults will be getting new bicycles for Christmas! Biking is fun and the exercise is good for your body. What’s not to love?
Here is the thing though; as much as you love your bike, so do thieves!
Bicycles are easy to steal.
Just ask anyone in the Netherlands where bike riding is a way of life.
Here are some fun and not-so-fun facts about bicycles in the Netherlands.
(and we are sharing these because we can learn from the Dutch about how to protect our property!)
Where and how are these bicycles stolen?
Most bikes are stolen from stores, train stations and schools, as that’s the mode of transportation for the Dutch.
In the USA, most bicycles are stolen from where you think they might be safe; from homes, garages and yards.
There are ways to make it harder for a thief to ride off with your possession!
Don’t make it too easy for someone to walk or ride away with your bicycle. Always, always double check that your bicycle is locked before walking away from it.
Fact; many Dutch people use two (or three) locks! They idea is that if you use multiple locks, it takes longer for a thief to open the locks and thus to steal your bike. Chances are someone might see the thief mess with the bike and alert authorities. One lock makes it just too easy!
There are locks and then there are locks. A cheap lock can be opened with a screwdriver in under 2 seconds! Seriously. So buying a more expensive lock buys time because they will be much harder to open! Certified locks are more expensive, but if you (or Santa) have already paid for an expensive bike, don’t you want to protect your investment?
This is to prevent a thief from using the ground to leverage whatever tool they are using to break your lock. It’s an added security measure that’s easy to remember – lock up high.
We recommend using a long, strong chain lock to secure your bicycle to a permanent, stationary object. In your garage that might be a bolted-down bike rack or a heavy wall unit. When out and about we recommend you secure your bicycle to a garden gate, a metal fence or a mailbox post, just to name a few options if you are looking around.
Smart thieves would know how to leave the wheel and steal your bike! Make sure to lock the frame of your bicycle to the stationary object. This is where a second or even third lock would come in handy; first secure the frame to a stationary object, then secure the wheels to the frame.
If you have a choice, leave your bicycle in full view of where you will be. If you are going in a store, lock up your bicycle right outside. If this is not an option, leave the bicycle in full view of the general public. Locking it up in a dark parking garage gives thieves a real opportunity to come and steal your bike as not many people will witness the crime.
Cameras are your friend! Install security cameras in your garage, trained on your bicycle and other valuables.
Another tool you can use is a GPS tracker. You will know where your bicycle is at all times!
These tips are all for bicycles, but they work for motorcycles as well!
Have fun, and be safe on the road – don’t forget to wear your helmet.
With this added bundle of joy in your family, comes added responsibility for you as new parents!
Mom + Dad + Baby = Family
As the leaders of the pack so to speak, you are in charge of keeping everyone in your new family safe, and your most valuable possessions secure.
If you have an older child, or two, or three, you’ve most likely already adjusted some of your security and safety protocols each time you added a new bundle of joy to your family. If this is your first baby, we want to make sure that you are informed to make the best decisions regarding safety and security for your family.
Here are a few tips we’ve gathered from the experts i.e other parents and security professionals.
Keeping baby safe inside the home is great, but what about dangers coming in from outside?
A home invasion is a very traumatic experience, whether you have a new baby, or not.
There is never a guarantee that a break-in or home evasion won’t happen to you and yours, yet there are many ways to deter a criminal. Then if you have a monitored security alarm system, you have the added knowledge that when help is ever needed, help is on the way with the push of one button, or with one tripped wire, or with one smoke alarm going off.
We welcome your thoughts, questions and feedback!
One of the most frequently asked questions about our Myrtle beach Self Defense classes is
“Can I bring my daughter/son?”
The answer is a definite yes! We encourage participation of children and teenagers in our self defense classes. We understand that one of the biggest fears a parent has is the personal safety and overall wellbeing of their child. We understand, because we are parents ourselves.
Therefore, our self defense classes welcome young children and teenagers alike, to come train alongside their parent.
There are some easy answers to this question “Why do children need to know self defense?”
Safety, awareness, power and much, much more; a list with the reasons why all of our children, male and female, need to know how to defend themselves (against a bully at school or in case of an attempted kidnapping) goes on and on.
It is by no means a complete list, but a great start to understand how self defense can help your child in childhood and beyond! (think college, and work environment!)
There is no ‘right’ age and no ‘wrong’ age for children to learn self defense, but we recommend starting the process early! In our Myrtle Beach Self Defense Classes we’ve had girls as young a 6 years old join the class. Often, preteens and teenager join us – and not all girls either. We feel anytime a child asks is a good time to teach them self defense, as well as anytime you feel your child could use a dose of self confidence.
When the children are very young, simple tricks and useful language are taught. Even a six year old can yell, scream, pull hair, bite, kick and punch and adult!
When teenagers come in to our self defense classes, they are often more reserved and need to be encouraged to be more vocal. They are taught to yell and draw attention to the situation before it escalates. With the older teens we also go over rape defense, knife safety, gun safety and pepper spray usage – because why have it not be able to use it?
Private classes or group self defense classes and martial arts classes are great ways to teach children self defense.
Children (and adults) learn by repetition, so we encourage children to get on the mat and learn self defense moves. We also demonstrate how to escape, how to attack, how to defend and much, much more. We purposely don’t always match people up according to size, because often those who attack you will be bigger, stronger, larger, taller. That type of intimidation needs to be removed – a child needs to have the confidence to know s/he can do something to get out of a dangerous or hairy situation, even if the attacker is larger or taller.
We recommend repeating self defense classes at a minimum twice per year, if the child is not enrolled in a martial art program, but ideally s/he would take a monthly class to be able to keep practicing and learning these self defense moves!
Check out our Facebook Page Myrtle Beach Self Defense and ‘like’ us to stay informed of new classes.
