We have seen this question asked all month as it’s November. Many people practice #ThankfulNovember or #30daysofthankfulness on social media, sharing small and large things, places and people they are thankful for each day!
We are so lucky to live in beautiful Myrtle Beach! We are lucky to live near the beach, have gorgeous weather most of the year and live a bountiful life lived in short, t-shirt and flip-flops!
What about you? What are you thankful for?
There are many people in this world who do not have basic necessities such as access to clean drinking water, food and a roof over their head. There are many people in this world who live in areas of unrest and war; we are so lucky to live in a place in this world with access to all of these things.
If you are lucky enough to live in a safe and secure home with an alarm system like we do, isn’t it time to list some of the reasons it makes you thankful?
We have come up with 3 reasons to be thankful for your security system. Read and let us know if you feel the same way!
This alone should be the #1 reason you are thankful for your security system. In case of attack, fire or home invasion, your security system – if connected to our monitoring company C.O.P.S. – can call the authorities for back up, whatever agency is needed (rescue, fire or police).
Minutes and seconds saved can be the difference between a good or a very bad outcome of any of these scenarios.
We are thankful that our security system keeps our loved ones safe!
If you, like us, own a business, you know firsthand how much effort, time and money has gone in to making your business successful. You want that taken away in an instant now, would you?
A fire that would totally destroy your retail store can do that. Employee theft can cripple your bottom line. An accident in your restaurant which results in a lawsuit can do that – but with a security system and security cameras in place, and a monitoring company to back you up, your business is protected.
We are thankful that our security system deters crime our our business!
Now when you add “Will Keep Your Loved Ones Safe” to “Deters Crime At Your Business” you got what?
Peace of mind!
If you can rest easy because your family is protected and you can rest easy because your business is protected, how much is that worth to you?
We are thankful that our security system gives us overall peace of mind!
We at Strand Security in Murrells Inlet are thankful, too.
We are thankful for
and much much more!
Thank you for being part of our success story. We are thankful for you!
When you are out and about and you see cameras at the following commercial locations
do you feel an immediate sense of safety and security?
Sure you do!
Most of these establishments have REAL cameras and are recording your activities, some are even monitoring your activities in real-time.
Would it make a difference to you and how you’d feel if you knew any number of these cameras were fake? Would you be able to detect if any of these cameras were fake? Would you avoid those commercial locations if you knew there were no real cameras recording your every move?
In retail stores, gas stations , car dealerships, restaurants and gyms, often cameras are used to prevent theft, as well as to protect their employees.
In schools and banks, often these cameras are used to keep employees and customers safe from harm first and foremost, and of course also help deter crime such as theft.
At home, home owners who have cameras report feeling a higher level of security then those without, especially if the cameras are connected to the monitoring system and the camera feed is accessible from a remote location.
If a burglar detects cameras while casing a home, s/he most likely will stake out a different home.
However, if this crime is to be a crime of opportunity (as in; they see you leave, or they know you are on vacation, or at work), most often the criminal does not care whether you have any cameras, as it will be a quick come and go.
With cameras installed and visible, you are deterring potential burglars, but not deterring professional criminals.
So what about just adding fake security cameras strategically places on the outside of your home?
Will fake security cameras prevent crime?
The answer is YES and BUT.
YES, fake security cameras will prevent some crime BUT there are a few important things fake security cameras can not do for you!
So fake cameras are just that, fake. A professional burglar can and will detect the cameras and identify them as fake quickly. Even those with the blinking red lights and those that move – or should we say, especially those with blinking red lights and those that move, randomly?
Once these fake cameras have been identified as fake, a burglar will continue their plan to break in with more confidence.
If a crime does take place, real security cameras can provide the police with a solid description of the criminals by the recordings. For obvious reasons, fake cameras will have no such footage and thus will yield no description of any criminal.
Real security cameras connected to your monitored alarm system can provide real-time updates on an on-going crime and then alert those who are monitoring your system to call for help an back up, in real time and with detail! Using your security camera feeds, the company can spot the number of assailants in the home as well as the weapons they carry and where they are located in the home. This information can be relayed to the police to aid in apprehending the suspects and keep you and your family alive.
To sum it all up, fake security cameras give a false, or fake, sense of security.
Fake security cameras do not prevent crime.
Fake security cameras might deter a fraction of potential crimes, but will be of no use in a dangerous situation.

You might know an elderly person with a personal panic button.
Don’t we all remember the first commercial (1987) with that famous line:
“I have fallen and I can’t get up”
Personal panic buttons are wonderful and enable our seniors and disabled citizen to live a more independent life then they would without.
However, panic buttons are not just for personal use (or for banks). Regular businesses could and should consider installing panic buttons in their place of business. Not convinced? Let us show you the ways…
A Panic Button is Cost Effective for your Business
What does this mean? Many businesses spent lots of money on safety and security of their goods, but not on the safety and security of their employees. However, if an employee gets hurt on the job, or worse, cost skyrockets. Getting a quick response time during emergencies can help save a life. A panic button at your place of business can summon help quickly when 9-1-1 can not be called from a phone.
A Panic Button Protects If the Threat Comes from Within
Businesses put up barriers like gates, buzz-in systems and steel doors to prevent criminals from entering their building. Businesses add security cameras and security systems to further deter criminals from stealing, loitering and attacking. However, what happens if the threat comes from within the business? From someone who is already inside the business, maybe a coworker or trusted delivery person? While current events show us that no one is safe from harm, no matter where you live and where you go in public (a concert, a bank, a school or a movie theater), a panic button can help those who are in a dire situation quickly!
A Panic Button Promotes Workplace Safety
When your company deals with the public, and customers come into your place of business for a service or a product, and you have a slew of ‘random strangers’ coming through your door like it is a revolving door, it is imperative that you protect your employees as well as your customers from potential danger. A panic button near the cash register, or strategically placed around the workplace, or even on your manager or person-in-charge will allow a call for help within seconds of an emergency. Often it is seconds, not minutes that can make the difference between life and death. Employees who feel save at work perform better.
Do you own a business on the Grand Strand, in the Myrtle Beach area? We would love to come talk to you about installing panic buttons in your place of business. From our own personal experience, we know how important this back up is.
We’ve been busy here at Strand Security in the Myrtle Beach area, not just with installing new home security systems and home automation features, but also with writing this blog and several of the articles we’ve been writing lately are about home automation. The Grand Strand area is growing rapidly and new homes, new neighborhoods, new businesses and new roads are being build at incredible speed!
It’s a popular topic to write about as it’s a growing trend among home owners!
People like you want the right information to make the right decision about their home before they invest time and money into home automation. Believe us when we say ‘we get it’!
Want to know more about home automation and what home automation can do for you, here are some of the most recent articles on our very own Strand Security blog that talks about automation and smart technology.

We hope these articles have inspired you and made you excited about using home automation to turn your home into a smart home! We are here to help you…!
In case you are still hesitant, here are 5 reasons you will want home automation now!
Of course you will get improved security with home automation! Your systems will work together and the possibilities are endless. The best part? Once it’s set up, your overall security is enhanced by it. For example, you might be able to watch your home security cameras in real time from an app on your device! Nothing will get by you.
As your home is automated, many ‘daily tasks’ will be automated. With voice activation simple commends like ‘good morning house’ could lower the temperature in your home, raise the blinds and unlock your front door all at the same time without you lifting a finger!
Since everything is automated, it is, well, automated! No more frustration that you forgot to change the thermostat before your left the home. No more frustration that you forgot to set your security alarm system. No more frustration that you can’t remember if you fed the dog…
Home automation will automatically save you… money! Of course it does. Your thermostat will be automated to give you the perfect temperature when you are home, saving energy when you are not!
If you are ready to sell your home soon, home automation features can be an important selling point and enhance the overall feel for your home to a potential buyer. Getting the best and latest and greatest gadgets is something most home buyers would want!
Call your local professional to consult with. Our phone number number is 843-318-6392
After doing research, like reading this and other articles online, you might have an idea of what features you might want and need in your home. The next step would be to have a professional come out to your home and give you an even clearer picture of home automation possibilities.
Is that what we are referencing when we say “Give your home a voice?”
Not at all!
We don’t want anyone to know your secrets. Security means home security, cyber security as well as home safety. We don’t want anyone to get to you, your assets or your family.
Whether you live in a large metropolitan area or on the Grand Strand in the Myrtle Beach area like we do, we’ve got something else in mind when we talk about ‘giving your home a voice’!
How convenient would it be to be able to ‘talk’ to your home and for things to ‘magically’ happen?
“Turn on the lights”
“Close the blinds”
“Turn on the TV”
“Lock the garage door”
“Arm the security system”
Better yet, you can create sequences that will do it all – with one simple command.
‘Wake up’ ➡️ your system might raise the shades, adjust your thermostat and turn off lights! or
‘Bed time’ ➡️ your system might lock your doors, arm your system, adjust your thermostat and turn on outside lights.
How can you get in on this awesomeness?!
The tuxedo touch is
is intuitive, easy to learn and easy to use whether you’re controlling your security and home control functions, viewing and recording video, or using voice commands.

According to wikipedia
a generation of people, typically in their thirties or forties, responsible for bringing up their own children and for the care of their aging parents.
Add ‘juggling full-time jobs and after-school activities for the kids’ to this and you’ve got a perfect storm!
Myrtle Beach is a great place to retire to (read: cheap and mild climate). We host many ‘snow birds’ from up north for part of the year, but we also have a thriving senior community full of people who’ve made Myrtle Beach their permanent home. Many of their children have followed their parents to this wonderful place at the beach, raising their own kids while staying connected and close by their own parents.
As these retirees age, they become more and more dependent on their children to help them.
A bit of history about the Sandwich generation and who coined that term.
“Social worker Dorothy Miller, originally coined the term “sandwich generation” back in 1981, to describe women in their 30s to 40s who were “sandwiched” between young children and aging parents as their primary caregiver. A lot has changed since then. Women are delaying child-bearing and seniors are living longer. Because of these added variables, the “sandwich generation” definition has morphed along the way and tends to target both genders and the predominant age is 40-65 years old.”
Do you fit into this category?
Are you caring both for your young family as well as your aging parents?
Are you stressed, overworked, stretched to the limit, and tired?
We have several products and services that can help you – the sandwich generation – with
While this does not solve all of your issues and worries, we can help you get a handle on a few important issues.
Here we go!
GPS Vehicle Tracker from Honeywell Total Connect™️️ lets you check in on your loved one and where they are – in real-time from your phone. You can also check to make sure they are driving at a safe speed and are driving where they are supposed to be going. Won’t it be great to see where both your parents (especially if they are getting older) and your new teenage driver are with the touch of one button? You can monitor multiple vehicles straight from your phone or tablet!

From our own experience with older parents and teenagers, we know a home with multiple remotes can cause remote confusion. Confusion about anything isn’t good because who will they call?
You who are at work, you who is taking care of business or the other ‘generation’.
To combat this confusion, we offer peace of mind!
We offer not only universal remotes for sale, we also will come to your home and program them!
Whether your aging parent lives alone, or you have young (re)teen coming home from school while you are still at work, a panic button that works with your security system can really offer you peace of mind.
We offer self defense classes under our Myrtle Beach Self Defense division! We are excited we have participants from as young as 6 to 80 and up! Learning self defense together, with an older or younger generation is extremely powerful. We see mothers with daughters in our classes every month, especially mothers with teenagers (in high school or college). If you have a mom who lives alone, take the class with her. If you have a new teenage driver, or recent high school graduate, or college age daugther, take her to a class. The confidence, assertiveness and powerful knowledge each participant receives can save their lives!
Check out this recent news story about a runner who had just completed a self defense class and then was attacked! She not only survived, she was able to keep the attacker locked up long enough for police to come and arrest him.
From the article
“Thankfully I just took a self-defense class offered at my work and utilized all of it. My face is stitched, my body is bruised, but my spirit is intact.
The basic concepts and little phrases I learned—like ‘hard bones to soft fleshy places’—really stuck,” Herron said. “It’s not like I was taking notes and trying to actively memorize the class. Your brain is built to survive, but you have to put the right information in it.”
Whatever you need, however we can help, we are here!
We live and work in the Myrtle Beach community ourselves, raising a family of our own, and your security (and safety) is our business!

Do you know if your home is safe for your family and pets?
Let’s look at the ways we at Strand Security can help you have the safest home for your loved one.
If your fire alarms are NOT wired into your home security system, you run the risk of being caught unaware when your batteries die and thus being caught without a fire alarm. With a wired alarm attached to your security system, you have the peace of mind to know that authorities will be called in case of a fire, even if you aren’t home, or if you are caught in the fire yourself.
Read “Keeping your family safe from fires – Fire Safety 101” to learn more.
Fire places can provide heat and comfort in those long winter months. They are also a potential hazard if not cared for properly.
The byproduct of enjoying a crackling flame is creosote buildup (the major cause of chimney fires) and soot, which can restrict air flow and damage the fireplace chimney. Even a gas fireplace chimney can become blocked by a bird’s nest or other debris. Prevent problems with an annual chimney inspection.
Read about Chimney Inspections here.
Last but not least, carbon monoxide is a truly silent killer. You home isn’t really safe without a carbon monoxide detector/alarm, again hardwired into your security system!
Do you want to know why that’s important? Do you want to know how to prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?
Last but not least…
Answer this question for us: How Secure is your home?

Even if you live in a so-called safe neighborhood, crime happens and we want to make sure you are “Smart, Safe and Secure” in your home!
It seems that no matter where you live; Myrtle Beach, Maryland or Massachusetts the delivery trucks know where to find you this time of year. I bet like us, you rely on UPS, FedEx and the United States Postal Services to deliver the packages loaded with the gifts you shopped for online!
If you leave for work early in the morning, these packages will be delivered to your home and left unattended on your doorstep until you come home.
There are TWO PROBLEMS with this.
First off, this alerts would-be-thieves that you aren’t home. Packages left on a doorstep signals to them that the house is empty – not just empty now, but empty aaaaaallllll day.
Second, packages left on doorsteps also signals to them that you have money to buy packages and that you are holidays shopping online. This might spike an interest in your home for ‘future reference’ meaning you might be put on a criminals’ home invasion hit list!
Watch how this happened to a family in St Louis County, Missouri and how savvy the 65 year old thief was! She was caught of course, because of the home security cameras installed in and outside this home, and police have this to say as a warming for others.
“You just think ‘Two-day shipping, I’ll pick it up when we get home from work that night,’” said St. Louis County Police Sgt. Shawn McGuire. “This time of year is really known for this type of stuff. Criminals know that packages are being delivered to people’s houses for Christmas.”
You may expect all those packages to draw criminals, but maybe not a criminal like this one.
“The (surveillance) video shows an elderly woman, almost looks like someone’s grandma,” said the victim, who asked not to be identified. “She just bends down, grabs them like they’re hers, and walks away.”
The victim had three packages stolen from his front porch in Oakville late Wednesday afternoon, just before 5:00 p.m.
His home surveillance camera caught what he and his wife missed: the same black, H3 Hummer passing their driveway four times in less than five minutes. Two minutes after the Hummer’s last pass, the thief walked onto the porch and took the packages.
“If you see any suspicious vehicles following a UPS truck or FedEx truck or you see a car non-stop circling around a certain neighborhood or a street, going back and forth at a slow rate of speed like they’re checking out a house, please get that license plate and call us immediately,” McGuire said.
“No one would expect an elderly (person), whether or not it’s a disguise, it sure looks like it’s just an elderly woman to me,” the victim said. “I would love for people to know and be aware this does happen. You see it on the news and you don’t think it’s going to happen to you. I’m just thankful we were able to have cameras and get some evidence for the police.”
Police suggest having packages dropped at your back door or arrange to pick up them up at the Postal Service, UPS, or FedEx, and let trusted neighbors know when you have an important delivery coming.
Here is another – local Myrtle Beach – cover story by ABC News about packages being stolen and crime prevention.
“If you’re having a package that’s going to be shipped to you, one, make sure that you’re home if you’re able to. If you’re not, try to have it shipped to your place of work or, if possible, have someone that’s a close friend or relative accept that package for you so that it’s not sitting outside,” Crosby said.
Bradford owns JerriBob’s Mail Service, and she said about half of her customers ask about their packages’ safety.
She has some advice for everyone who shares the same concerns: “Require the signature, especially if there is anything of value. You want to make sure that somebody is home to sign for it. You can also do the scheduling of the delivery.”
The St Louis police also had several good suggestions:
Here are a few things you can do to prevent your holiday packages from disappearing
We can add ONE MORE suggestion to this list
We wish you a happy, healthy, safe and secure Merry Christmas.
As parents to three kids, as small business owners and as security company owners, we know a thing or two about safety and security! We also know that as parents of teens, you can not be with them at all times, everywhere. Kids go off with their friends, or are left home alone to do homework (and chores, maybe?).
You just can not be with your child or teen 24/7.
So as your child ages and gets older, s/he should have more responsibilities around the house, and around town.
This responsibility comes with added anxiety for parents, right?!
The best way to combat this anxiety is to be informed and to teach our children well!
In previous articles, we’ve touched on several kid-related safety and security issues.
Check out the following articles for great tips and information!
So what can you do today to reduce your stress over your child gaining more independence and them being alone more?
Don’t wait – it’s never a perfect or convenient time to do it, but if you can’t make the time today, at least make the time to schedule a family safety meeting this weekend!
Let us know if we can help you in anyway!
Today is the Autumn Equinox and since this day is the start of a ‘change’ of season, we are using this date to remind you to change something very important in your home!
If you own your home, and even if you rent, you should be aware of the date you last changed your smoke detector batteries.
Go ahead. Think of the date. We’ll wait a minute…
Can’t recall when it was?
Most people when asked when they last did change their smoke detector batteries will either say
‘I don’t recall‘
‘When the alarm started to chirp in the middle of the night because the battery was low‘
Neither of these answers is a very good one!
If you are the responsible adult in charge of the home you need to not only know this, but you need to have a plan to make sure your smoke detectors work when an emergency arises!
We want you to be safe!
We have a super simple plan for you to implement RIGHT NOW to keep your smoke detectors in working order when they are needed.
Here’s the plan:
If this is the first time you’ve heard about Carbon Monoxide Detectors and if you aren’t sure about what they are, what they do and why your home and business needs these, read this first!
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels.
Many people install carbon monoxide monitors that you plug-in to the wall or run on batteries.
Of course, these batteries need to be replaced, too!
While these kind of detectors are great (it’s better to have those than no sensors at all!), they do not have the ability to call for outside help when needed if you are incapacitated.
Therefore, if you have a security alarm system, we recommend hooking up the carbon monoxide sensors right to your security alarm; the carbon monoxide levels in your home or business will be monitored 24/7!
We at Strand Security use Honeywell Total Connect™ for this and as we read on the Honeywell Total Connect™ website
System Sensor carbon monoxide (CO) detectors provide the highest level of CO protection available. Our system-connected devices enable 24/7 central station monitoring that ensures occupants or building management will be alerted if the detector goes into alarm, is disabled, or has reached its six-year end-of-life and needs to be replaced. Furthermore, this system monitoring provides an extra level of protection in cases when occupants are unable to respond to the alarm.
Whether you decide to change your batteries today, or if you want to wait until the first of the month, the MOST IMPORTANT part of this is that you will ACT and DO IT as soon as possible!
Would you ever go drive your car with a broken seatbelt, or broken brakes?
Would you allow your child to ride a horse or a bicycle without a helmet?
Would you go an a boat that had no life jackets?
Get the batteries, replace them ASAP and be secure in knowing you are protected in case of an emergency!
