Do You Love Soccer as Much As Our Family Does?

Strand Security is a locally owned and locally operated small business. We are also soccer parents.

All three of our boys play soccer locally and love the sport. We are huge soccer family and we can be found on the sideline of a soccer training or soccer game most evenings and weekends.

Did you know that our local soccer club, Coast FA, is the 5th largest club in the state of South Carolina?

Why We Sponsor Coast FA, the Largest Soccer Club at the Beach!

Strand Security is a proud sponsor of Coast FA

As local business owners, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

There are several local charities we have supported over the past seven+ years.

We’ve also been involved in local fundraising projects, like that time we collected donations for the Louisiana flood victims.

A little over two years ago, we started a Self-Defense division of Strand Security and in those two years have provided over 20 classes for local girls and women in self-defense.

Last but not least, being a sponsor for the local soccer club allows us to help provide soccer programs to underprivileged children who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to play this incredible team sport.

Coast FA Year-Round Programs to Love

Coast Fa offers a variety of soccer programs year-round.

This includes the following programs

and more!

Go Myrtle Beach Mutiny!

Coast FA also owns the Myrtle Beach Mutiny, who plays from May-July in the PDL.

Follow the Myrtle Beach Mutiny Facebook Page to stay updated on home games played in North Myrtle Beach! Watching that level of soccer is a treat and especially since it doesn’t warrant much travel to see this team!

Coast Fa players get a chance to interact with many of these top-level players during summer camp!

Soccer Day Camps in June in Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island

You see, many of the Myrtle Beach Mutiny players are also the camp trainers!

If you are looking for a fun program for your young soccer players, check out the Coast FA summer day camps.

The first camps start next week! Take it from one soccer parent to another; your kids will have a blast.

The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season Starts This Week!

start of the 2018 atlantic hurricane season

Are You New To The Grand Strand or The Carolinas?

Welcome to the South! If you are new to South Carolina or North Carolina and this is your first summer in the south, you might be new to the Atlantic Hurricane season as well.

The Myrtle Beach area, where Strand Security is located, is a fast-growing area. New housing developments are popping out of the ground like mushrooms and new roads, intersections and schools are constructed so fast it’s hard to keep up with!

Many of the new residents to the Grand Strand are moving here from ‘up North’ as we locals say. That means that many new residents are unfamiliar with hurricane season, hurricane prep and hurricane readiness.

No worries, Strand Security is here to help you navigate hurricane prep!

The Atlantic Hurricane Season Starts on June 1, 2018

This coming week is the start of hurricane season in case you didn’t know.

The 2018 hurricane season runs from June 1, 2018, to November 30, 2018.

Hurricane activity has already been spotted and this 2018 hurricane season is expected to more active than usual!

What does that mean? It means that there is a higher chance of a hurricane affecting the Carolinas and thus affecting you, our fellow Grand Strand residents. Fortunately, those who have lived here their whole lives, and those who’ve experienced and lived through hurricanes, are always happy to share their knowledge with those who are new to the area.

Why ‘reinvent the wheel’ when you can learn from past mistakes and triumphs?!

Preparing in June Is Important Especially For New South Carolina Residents

As the hurricane season is usually not too active in June, this is a great time to do your research on what it will take to be ready and prepared for when a hurricane does head towards the Carolinas.

You will need to get a handle on what supplies are needed and when to start collecting a hurricane kit.

Here are 4 things you can start on in June, even if there is no hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean!

  1. Research the need for a generator. Purchase your generator this month if possible if you decide to buy one.
  2. Check and/or update your homeowner’s insurance policy and the need for flood and/or wind and hail insurance.
  3. Find out if you’ll need hurricane shutters or plywood boards and order them now! (ask your neighbors!)
  4. Talk to your security company and get a backup battery for your system ordered ASAP

Protecting People, Places, and Pets During The Next Hurricane

Next, start on your plans for evacuations and or staying.

Think about creating hurricane plans for

  • people
  • your home and business
  • pets

We have created an amazing resource for you this year!

Standing By For the next Hurricane, Prepared, Gives You Peace of Mind!

Why should you think about hurricane prep when there is no hurricane in sight?

Here is why!

As soon as there is a named hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, people panic.

Weather channels will regurgitate information, locals will run to the stores to purchase hurricane supplies and you’ll be overwhelmed with helpful and not-s-helpful hurricane preparedness advice.

Take it from us – do your homework now.

[Not to mention that any insurance policy you’d take out won’t be in effect that close to a natural disaster!]

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail!

Keep Your Home Secure While You Are on Summer Vacation!

keep your home secure while on summer vacation

Summer Crime Statistics and Break-in Numbers

For many law enforcement agencies, crime spikes during the summer. Crime statistics indicate warmer cities, however, often don’t experience much change. It’s generally cities in colder climates and tourist destinations, like Myrtle Beach, that experience the largest monthly changes in reported crimes.

Why is that?

Summer is supposed to be the best time of the year, but it sure brings out the worst in some people. A study released by the US Dept. of Justice found a definite correlation between the season and the crime rate. Researchers found that crime rates are often lower in the fall and winter while peaking in the summer. Some of the summer crime rate increases were significant.

On the Grand Strand, we also have a spike in crime rate due to an influx of tourists visiting our area. As our population swells in the summer months, so do crime rates!

Summertime = Burglary time!

From one of our earlier articles:

2 million home break ins are reported each year in the United States!
30 percent of break ins occur through an unlocked window or door.
66 percent of all break ins are residential break-ins vs business break ins.
The highest percentage of break ins happens during the summer months.
Homes without security systems are up to 300% more likely to be broken into.

How can you protect what is yours in this type of environment?

Before You Go on Vacation

Make a plan to keep your home and other assets safe while away.

Failing to plan is planning to fail!

Instead, follow these guidelines.

  1. Talk to your neighbors and tell them you’ll be away.
  2. Be aware of the recent crime rate in your neighborhood and what is being done about it.
  3. Double check all your locks and make sure all windows and doors are secured.

Having someone keep an eye on your property is a smart way to go on vacation and come home to an undisturbed home.

If you have a great security system and a monitoring company keeping an eye on your home while on vacation you have the best solution!

While You Are Away

Smart burglars – and yes, there are some smart and sophisticated burglars and thieves out there – will avoid confrontation. They do not want to come to your home while you are home. They do not want to break down a door, they’d rather find one unlocked. They do not want an alarm set off. They’d much rather burglarize a home without a system.

Here are 7 ways to protect your home while you are away (for the day or) on vacation!

Watch Your Home From Afar; The Best Option to Secure Your Home

Wouldn’t love to be a ‘fly on the wall’ to keep an eye on your home while away?

  • If someone tries to break-in, you’ll know!

  • If a fire breaks out, you’ll know!

Doesn’t knowing this give you peace of mind while on vacation?

Have Fun This Summer, Prepare Now.

Don’t delay talking with your friendly, local security company! Whether you need a new system installed or you want an upgrade with more cameras and newer technology, we at Strand Security have you covered!

Should I Evacuate With The Next Hurricane?

Should I evacuate with the next Hurricane?

Should You Evacuate When the Next Hurricane Heads Your Way?

The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1, 2018, till November 30, 2018. A lot can happen in those months and we are sure to see storm activity in the ocean soon enough.

If you are new to South Carolina, or the South Carolina coast, you might not have experienced a hurricane season before now.

You might ask yourself ‘Should I evacuate with the next hurricane?’

via GIPHY

The answer might surprise you!

How To Decide Whether To Evacuate For A Hurricane

There are several factors involved in whether you should evacuate for a hurricane.

Here are the most important factors you need to decide whether to stay and ride out the next storm, or whether you should evacuate.

  • What your local authorities are mandating or recommending you do. Each storm will be different.
  • Category of the named storm.
  • The path of the storm.
  • What type of home you live in.
  • How close you are to the ocean – if you are in a flood zone, you’ll be asked to evacuate sooner than someone who lives inland.
  • How many dependents you have, if any, and how young, or old, they are.
  • Whether you are able-bodied or if you rely on medical devices run on electricity to keep you healthy.
  • Your personal experience riding out a storm at home.
  • Transportation to evacuate.
  • Money for evacuation to a hotel, or supplies to head to a shelter.

It’s a personal decision whether to evacuate or stay during any storm and therefore you will be personally responsible for your actions, either way!

Sheltering at Home or at a Hurricane Shelter During a Hurricane

If you’ve ever ridden out a storm at home, you know how scary that can be! You don’t know what can and will happen!

You have to be prepared for the worst …

via GIPHY

…and hope for the best!

via GIPHY

If you do head to a shelter, make sure to bring the appropriate supplies.

You should bring at least a 3 day supply of the following:

  • Food & Water – Bring snacks, bottled water and non-perishable canned or packaged food.
  • Medications – Bring prescriptions, glasses and contacts and durable medical equipment.
  • Clothing- Bring a complete change of clothes and footwear.
  • Bedding – This include blankets and sleeping bags.
  • Hygiene Items – Bring sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste and sanitary items.
  • Important Papers – This includes ID, proof of residency and insurance papers.
  • Cash – This is just in case your debit or credit card is not working.
  • Entertainment Items -This includes puzzles, toys for children and reading material.
  • Miscellaneous – Battery-powered radio, First-Aid Kit, flashlight, Cash

How To Prepare Your Home for the Next Storm!

The very best way to prepare for the next storm is to start now before there is a named storm in the Atlantic Ocean headed to South Carolina!

Do You Really Need a Generator During a Hurricane?

Generator for Hurricane

Hurricane Season is Coming, Do You Have A Generator?

If you live on the east coast, you know all about hurricanes. Myrtle Beach and South Carolina residents certainly have experience dealing with hurricanes!

You might have lived through one recently.

Are you prepared? Do you feel ready to tackle yet another Atlantic Hurricane Season? Last time a hurricane came to your state and town, did your home lose power? Did you have a generator or did you muddle through?

Today, we look at why you really need a generator if you want to stay safe during the next hurricane!

What Does a Generator Do When The Power Goes Out?

In case of a power outage, your generator can take over important tasks in your home, especially now that many of us live in Smart homes and almost everything we do runs on electricity!

Here are some of the important devices in and around your home that run on, or use, electricity!

Think about your

  • fridge
  • freezer
  • stove
  • microwave
  • toaster
  • lights
  • locks
  • electronic devices
  • garage door
  • pool system

For those of you with small kids

  • baby monitors
  • TV
  • food blender
  • bottle warmer

For those of you who are elderly or live with the elderly

There is one other system that runs on electricity and that is your home security system!

Who Should Purchase a Generator for Hurricane Season?

This question seems to come up year after year; who should purchase a generator for hurricane season?

Here is our take on this!

  • Anyone who lives in a known hurricane zone
  • Someone who prefers to ‘ride out’ a storm vs voluntary evacuation
  • Those who have pets
  • People who are elderly
  • Families with babies and small children
  • Farmers, and those who live in a remote area

We highly recommend you do your due diligence and check out your options to purchase a generator. We highly recommend you purchase a generator BEFORE hurricane season begins in full-force as the supply will dwindle quickly as soon as there’s a named storm in the Atlantic Ocean.

How Does a Generator Keep You Safe?

Having a generator allows you to keep your security system activated!

Here is what Chuck Bryant of Strand Security has to say:

You can prepare for extended power outages (especially in coastal areas) by doing the following;

  • Connect the power circuit that powers your alarm panel to a generator.
  • Make sure you have a spare battery on hand. Power outages can certainly exceed the life of an existing battery.
  • Call your security company today to get your ‘back up’ alarm panel battery. Do not delay. As soon as a storm is named, these batteries, like all generators and all other hurricane supplies, will be in high demand.
  • If you have to evacuate, relay this information to your security company.
  • Monitor your assets from your smartphone and/or tablet while away.

Safety and security go hand-in-hand during a storm! Don’t delay, prepare your home today for hurricane season!

Can Cheap Security Systems Protect Me in an Emergency?

cheap security systems Myrtle Beach

If You Can’t Afford the Best Security System, Get What You Can Afford!

The question of whether cheap security systems can protect you in an emergency is a simple one.
The answer is ‘Yes, cheap security systems CAN protect you in an emergency, however…’

As always, there’s a caveat to such a question.

The ‘however‘ is what this article will focus on. Please read on.

Cheap Security Systems Don’t Last As Long

The problem with cheaply made products is that they are… well… cheap!

  • The materials used in cheap security systems is most likely not of the same grade as the more expensive units.
  • Corners will be cut with regards to research and testing cheaper units.

In other words, cheap security systems might not last as long and replacement costs can thus drive up your total cost.

Cheap Security Systems Don’t Always Integrate Well With Existing Hardware

If you are in the market for an upgrade and you want to go cheap, be forewarned that cheap systems often don’t integrate well with older systems or any system for that matter. Meaning, you might have to fork over more money because you might not be able to reuse existing hardware. Again, in the end, this will drive up the final cost.

Cheap Security Systems Might Break or Malfunction More Easily

Cheaply made does not always have to mean lesser quality.

When it does, however, and when cheap translates into broken or malfunctioning systems requiring maintenance, this, of course, comes at a cost.

As much as we like you, our customer, we really don’t want to come see you every month because of issues with a cheap security system. We much rather spend our time helping (new) customers set up new systems that will last a long, long time!

Cheap Security Systems Don’t Come with Good Warranties

When a system breaks to no fault of yours, warranties will allow for replacement units. That is, as long as you didn’t pick the cheapest security system without such warranty. In that case, you will be responsible for replacing units and again, cheap becomes expensive when you have these unexpected additional costs associated with your security system.

How To Select The Best Door Alarm To Keep My Assets Safe

best door alarm

Most Break-ins Happen Through Unlocked Doors!

Did you know that?

Most break-ins happen through unlocked doors and happen during the daytime hours of 10 AM – 2 PM.

Yes, that’s right! Daytime break-ins happen more than at any other time day or night, with easy access, because people don’t use their locks. We make it really easy for thieves to have access to our valuables this way.

We can do better than that, can’t we?

Let’s start with something you can do right now that will make it just a bit harder for someone to break into your home.

Make It A Habit To Always Lock Doors Behind You

Sounds simple enough, but it is a habit you need to create by doing it each and every time.

Start off by reading about evening routines to keep your family and your assets safe. You can apply some of these same principles to a daytime routine when you leave your home to go to work, to go shopping or even just going for a walk with your dog. Don’t ever assume that thieves come during the night in a black mask. Often, they come during the day, they might greet your neighbors and walk out with your valuables without anyone suspecting what they are doing.

Locking your doors is the first step.

So what is step two to prevent break-ins?

Research The Best Door Alarm To Purchase

Can we assume you always do due diligence on new purchases like homes, cars, refrigerators, and HVAC systems? You need to do due diligence on door alarms the same way.

This includes learning more about door alarms before talking to a dealer about purchasing a system.

Consider

  • price point/budget
  • size of your home
  • number of access doors and windows
  • stories of your home
  • current technology in your home
  • remote access

Once you have this information on a list, then pick up the phone and call your nearest local security dealer at 843-318-6392

Your Security Company Can Tell You More About What Brands They Prefer

Each security dealership has preferred vendors and brands they work with.

The best door alarms are those your security company uses the most, and those they trust to keep their customers and their family safe.

Why don’t you ask this:

“What door alarm do you have installed in your home?”

This should give you an answer to the question; ‘what is the best door alarm to keep my family safe?’

Go ahead and ask us today.

Then once you have a system installed, make it a habit to active your system whenever you leave your home!

Are You in Search of The Best Burglar System Money Can Buy?

best burglar system

Does Your Home Have a Burglar System?

If you have any sort of burglar system, congrats. We hope you did your research before purchasing and that you are happy with the system you picked and the provider you currently have. Have you had an emergency yet? How good was the customer service provided and how was the response time?

If you do not currently have any sort of system in your home, we assume you might want to know how to get the best burglar system money can buy!

Does Your Business Have a Burglar System?

If you own a business like us, you understand the value of preventing crime.

Employee theft, workplace accidents, vandalism, workplace invasion; each of these come with a heavy price tag.

Having a solid burglar system in place at your business location can help prevent and deter crime. A system with cameras can also help you determine cause, and guilt, of crimes.

If you do not currently have any sort of system at your place of business, we assume you might want to know how to get the best burglar system money can buy!

Here are several points to consider before buying any kind of security burglar system.

Do your Due Diligence and Research Burglar System Options First!

Why do you need a burglar alarm system?

Have you

  • recently purchased a new home?
  • moved into a new home?
  • made a state-to-state move?
  • switched neighborhoods?
  • been the victim of a crime?
  • read about the increase in crime in your town?
  • started a business?
  • taken over an existing business location?
  • recently dealt with employee theft?

Most often, something ‘triggers’ a homeowner or business owner to start looking for the best burglar system available.

The journey to select starts with solid research on what is available in your location.

Decide How Much Money You Can Spend on the Best Burglar System Money Can Buy

‘The best burglar alarm system your money can buy’ can mean many things.

When thinking about a budget think about the following cost; both now and in the future.

  • equipment
  • monthly monitoring
  • installation
  • equipment replacement
  • add-ons
  • smart home technology

Remember this:

The most basic burglar system will still deter a would-be burglar.

A fancy, automated system will make it easier for you to operate the system.

Will You Want Home Automation and Add Smart Technolgy in Your Home?

If you are going to be spending money on a burglar system, this is a great time to check out your smart home options!

These systems can and do work together.

Have you ever thought about

Talk to your trusted security company about these options BEFORE deciding on a burglar system.

Is the Track Record of the Remote Monitoring Company Important to You?

Last but not least, we want you to remember that you get what you pay for.

You could have the best equipment, the latest technology, and the nicest customer service rep, but if the response time of the monitoring company is not good, you could still be left ‘in a pickle’ when an emergency happens to you or your family!

We at Strand Security pride ourselves on working with the best in the industry!

5 Powerful Runner Safety Tips to Keep You Safe on the Roads

runner safety tips

Do You Love Running?

If you’ve never thought about running, or you are a new runner, we encourage you to try it.

Besides it being fun, there are many health benefits of running.

All Runners Need To Be Careful on the Roads

Have you ever thought about your personal safety when running?

Chances are you have only thought about danger once something has unexpectedly gone wrong.

This article is here to help prevent accidents and help you avoid dangers situations. A forewarned person is a forearmed person!

Everyone who goes out for a run will want to read these runner safety tips.

Whether you

  • are male or female
  • live in the city or suburbia
  • are young or old
  • run on familiar or new roads
  • are new to running or an old ‘pro’
  • run in the morning, during the day or at night

Danger is everywhere!

Here are the 5 most powerful runner safety tips to keep you safe on the roads.

1) The Buddy System; Don’t Run Alone

Don’t run alone if you can help it!

This is especially true for those who run

  • at night
  • in the dark
  • on trails
  • in isolated areas

There is runner safety in numbers.

Together, you deter a potential physical attack. Running with a buddy guarantees an instant helper in case there is a running accident or injury.

2) Share Your Training Plan & Route

Prior to each run, let someone know

  • distance
  • location
  • time

of your run.

In addition, share where you will park and with whom you’ll be running. Better yet, have a buddy system check-in after your run, so if you do not return from a scheduled run, someone will know to alert authorities.

This can be done through an app like the Glympse App or via text message with a parent, friend, spouse, sibling or grown child.

3) Carry A Weapon

We aren’t advocating you carry a gun while running. Instead, we suggest you carry something with you that can be used as a weapon!

You could carry pepper spray and your Smartphone, as both can be used as a weapon, of sorts.

Find additional weapon ideas, including rings, claws, lights, sprays in this article by Active.com

4) Be Visible

The danger to personal safety can also come in darkness. To make sure you are visible, wear reflective clothing or accessories, lights and always, always assume the cars do not see you – be aware and get out of the way when needed.

5) Listen To Your Body

Last but not least, you need to listen to your body to keep yourself safe.

This includes knowing when to stop running in extreme weather – in the heat here in South Carolina, or in the cold and snow up north! If it hurts, stop. If you exhaust yourself  – if you run past the danger zone of heatstroke and frostbite, just to name two dangers, you could do permanent damage or even go into cardiac arrest.

How To Get The Best Theater Room Money Can Buy

best theater room

Are you in the market for a new home theater? Do you want the best theater room money can buy? Look no further. We have the answers you need, want and have been looking for!

Strand Security in the Myrtle Beach area services both Horry County and Georgetown County and we specialize in customized home theater rooms. Before you give Chuck a call at 843-318-6392 to set up a consult about your needs and wants, you need to know several things!

Here are the 5 steps you need to take to get the best home theater room money can buy!

1) Do Theater Room Design Research

Before you call us, or anyone, you need to have some ideas of the possibilities!
Ask your friends, go online, visit Houzz and Pinterest and use Google to find some neat ideas.

2) Complete Brand Research for your Theater Room

Next, do your brand research.

What brands do you trust, what do you like, what does each brand offer.

A good way to go about that is to check brand warranties and online reviews!

3) Take Stock of Reusable Furniture and Equipment

What do you already own in your home, that you will want in your home theater?

Is it seating, speakers, a large TV or surround sound system, or are you starting from scratch?

4) Take Measurements of the Future Theater Room

If you have your room ready to go, this is the right time take careful measurements. The size of the room will dictate the type of sound system you will need, the size and placement of your furniture and more. Make sure to note everything on paper, including the number of outlets, windows etc.

5) Set a Budget for Your New Theater Room

It’s important to set a budget for your home theater room. You’d be wasting a lot of time looking at brands and equipment if your budget is too small to afford it. If you don’t know what type of budget you need, make that your top priority question when you call a home theater expert!

Best to get that out of the way to make things clear – your budget should include line items for furniture, technical equipment, and installation fees.
